July 19, 2017 (Denver) - The Padres were once again in a position where they needed to avoid the sweep today against the Rockies. Clayton Richard started against Jon Gray for Colorado.
Nolan Arenado got the Rockies started again with a single up the middle after Richard gave up a single and a walk. Charlie Blackmon came in to score. Richard next threw a passed ball that allowed D.J. LeMahieu to score. Ian Desmond hit a sac fly that brought Arenado home and the Rockies got a three-run first inning and went up 3-0.
Arenado tallied again in the fourth with two outs for his second RBI with another single up the middle that once again scored Blackmon for a 4-0 Rockies lead.
Trevor Story joined in on the fun with a triple in the third that scored Gerardo Parra. Ryan Hanigan singled up the middle to score Story and the Rockies extended their lead to 6-0.
Arenado continued the Rockies’ run-in-every-inning streak with a solo bomb in the fourth. Trevor Story added a homer of his own good for two. Gray singled to center to score Hanigan and Blackmon capped it off with a two-run homer to make it 12-0 Rockies.
Arenado hit his second home run of the day to make it 13-0 Rockies in the fifth.
Jabari Blash finally put the Padres on the board with a line drive to center in the sixth that scored Carlos Asuaje. Cory Spangenberg added a boost with a three-run homer to make it 13-4.
But the hits (and runs) kept coming. Pat Valaika singled in the Rockies’ half of the sixth to score Story. Arenado tallied the hat trick homer, a three-run bomb to make it 17-4 Colorado.
Hanigan added a sac fly in the seventh and a nightmare of a game for the Padres was finally over, with Colorado getting the sweep with an 18-4 win.
The Padres will play another series with the Giants starting tomorrow, this time in San Francisco and going for four games. First pitch for game one is at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow night. Jhoulys Chacin will start against Madison Bumgarner for the Giants.
