July 20, 2017 (San Francisco) - Yesterday was another game we all want to forget.  In fact, that entire series in Colorado was one we’d all like to forget.  But tonight, the Padres started a fresh, new, four-game series against the Giants in the bay.  Jhoulys Chacin started against MadBum for the Giants.

ECM likes to say the Padres have two teams.  Padres A was the team that played the series in Colorado.  Padres B was the team that played tonight.  Hunter Renfroe started things in the second with a two-run homer--his first off the DL--to give the Padres a 2-0 lead.

It looked like Padres B would stick around for the entire game, but Padres A took over in the sixth when Denard Span put the Giants on the board with a single that scored Gorkys Hernandez.  Eduardo Nunez tied the game with another single that scored Span to tie the game.

But Cory Spangenberg saved the day for the Padres with a two-run homer in the seventh to give the Padres a 4-2 lead and kick MadBum out of the game.

Wil Myers added a cushion in the eighth with an RBI double that Jose Pirela scored from first on to make it 5-2 Padres and seal a game one win.

Game two is tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m.  Trevor Cahill starts against Jeff Samardzija.

Transaction news:

  • Hunter Renfroe reinstated from 10-day DL
  • Manuel Margot on paternity list
