Public letter to Charles B. Reed, Chancellor and Board of Trustees, California State University
"We concur that SDSU is once again pursuing a strategy of “discouraging” local students from enrolling at the campus. This discouragement had been one of the well kept secrets on the campus. ...By closing the door to many of these youngsters the University and CSU will perpetuate the educational inequality that has plagued women in our society. "

September 6, 2009 (San Diego's East County)-- Richard Allen Clements kept his foot firmly on the gas pedal as he watched two 9-year-old girls glance back at him and start running. Moments later, the short lives of Christie Turner and Adina Gonzalez ended.

The structure of our government in Washington is not making it easy to get changes we seek and need.
The Health Insurance Industry ran amok during the Bush Years because Bush et al showed contempt for government, citizens, regulation, fair play, justice, peace, responsibility, service, commitment, etc.

September 3, 2009 (Sacramento)--It’s time for California’s legislative Democrat leaders to either get serious about water reform or get out of the way.
So far they haven’t done either one.

August 21, 2009 (San Diego) -- Here’s a depressing comparison of California taxes and economic climate with the rest of the states. The news is breaking bad, and getting worse (I keep updating this article):
California has the 2nd highest state income tax in the nation: . 9.55% at $48,000. 10.55% at $1,000,000

Editor’s note: Governor Schwarzenegger and the Legislature just slashed hundreds of millions from programs helping disabled people with medical care, finding jobs, and Special Olympics. An effort to override the Governor’s line-item vetoes is underway. Details at

By Robert Cruikshank, Courage Campaign (originally printed at http://www.couragecampaign.org/page/community/post/roberticruickshank/C2t5 with links to sourcing) June 9, 2009 (Sacramento)--It's a question that I rarely ever see asked, and one that is *never* answered, certainly not in a state where the conventional wisdom is that revenue increases are impossible, even though we've never tried to make them happen.

In the year AD 64, Roman emperor Nero fiddled at the top of a tower as a devastating fire swept through the city of Rome. According to many accounts, Nero himself started the fire and then blamed it on Christians.
Today, an economic fire is ravaging California.
Unemployment has climbed to 11.5%, income tax revenue is down 33.8% from last year and the budget deficit is now $24 billion.

June 9, 2009 (Sacramento)--Our local libraries often hold book sales to generate funds for new books, or other needed materials or supplies. It makes sense: Sell old or out of date resources and use those funds to purchase new items. A no-brainer.
Many school districts in California have stacks of unneeded, old and obsolete instructional materials in warehouses which if resold could generate new funds for our schools.

By Joel A. Harrison, PhD, MPH June 8, 2009 (San Diego)--The California Supreme Court decision on Prop. 8 "carves out a limited exception to these constitutional rights by reserving the official designation of the term 'marriage' for the union of opposite-sex couples, but leaves undisturbed all of the other aspects of a same-sex couple's constitutional right to establish an officially recognized and protected family relationship and to the equal protection of the laws."

An Editorial By Miriam Raftery Editor, East County Magazine
June 3, 2009 (San Diego’s East County)—If California ever needed an action hero at the helm, it’s now. Instead, Arnold has taken the “girlie man” way out –balancing the budget on the backs of the poor by proposing to eliminate healthcare for children and welfare-to-work programs. He also wants to close 80% of state parks, release prisoners, and slash school spending.

As most political junkies are aware, California just held a special election two days ago in which voters were asked to approve measures to close our enormous budget deficit by borrowing against the lottery, stealing from children's education and mental health services programs, and agreeing to a painful spending cap in exchange for moderate, regressive tax increases. Voters overwhelmingly rejected those measures, approving only one proposition denying legislators the ability to raise their own salaries during bad budget years.

By Assemblyman Joel Anderson “California is about to increase taxes on businesses. If you would like information about moving your business to Texas, press 1.” This was an automated phone call I received in February during budget negotiations. Slick recruiting methods used by other states should be a wake-up call to the State Legislature that increasing taxes on Californians only drives jobs and companies out of state, or worse, out of business.

Water, water everywhere: How San Diego Can Become Water Self-Sufficient—And Even Be a Water Exporter
A Commentary By Jim Bell
May 10, 2009 (San Diego)--Many experts are projecting doom and gloom, scenarios of decreasing water supplies and increasing cost, yet the San Diego/Tijuana Region can easily become renewable water self-sufficient and even become a net water exporter. Yes, that’s right. We can have plenty of water for drinking, showering, growing food and even swimming—with liquid assets to spare.
