February 29, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) –  Photos taken at Lake Jennings during March may be entered in Helix Water District’s Lake Jennings Photo Contest.  Prizes of up to $100 will be awarded in adult and student categories.  “This bird is a recent resident to San Diego County,” said Turok, who has had the bird identified by the Ornithology Department at the San Diego Natural History Museum.

On Sunday, September 11, 2011, a wreath was placed at the Eternal Flame located at the Viejas Outlets in remembrance of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and in honor of the victims of the terrorists attacks, their families and first responders.

July 29, 2011 (Anza Borrego) -- Daren Sefcik captured this rare image of a bobcat peering out of a rocky cave at Potrero Canyon in Anza-Borrego, a remote location accessible only by foot or by horse. 

 

 

"I went out hiking the canyon to try and reach the base of Stephenson Peak," Sefcik said. "About a mile from the base on the mountain, I stopped to eat some lunch and I noticed a black silhouette of what looked like a Batman head in some rocks. With a 300mm zoom on my lens I was able to see a bobcat."

July 16, 2011 (Jacumba) -- Wayne Brammer captured these two images of a Cal-Fire crew and a San Diego Sheriff's helicopter in action battling a brush fire near Jacumba this week.

 

"With all  the power lines running all over this area, my hat goes off to all of these guys. The smoke and power lines made it tough," he wrote, adding that he was amazed to see a house still standing after this blaze near Old Highway 80.

I headed south on Highway 94, then west on Otay Lakes Road, passing a parachute center before meandering among the various lakes that make up this close-to-the-border region. This area has a colorful—if largely forgotten—history.
