East County News Service

June 21, 2016 (Rancho San Diego) -- Author James Thomas will be at the Heritage of the Americas Museum (12110 Cuyamaca College Drive West, El Cajon) will give a presentation and book signing on Saturday, July 16 from 1-3 p.m.  He will be discussing his book, Corps of Discovery, about the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  Thomas is an expert on Lewis and Clark, so the facts are all there.  But he novelized the story, so his book is filled with conversation and you really feel like you get to know each person on the expedition.  We also sell his book in the Museum Store.   This presentation is fun for all ages. Thomas dresses up as an explorer from the period and brings artifacts like those used on the Lewis and Clark expedition.  So bring the family and come to the museum for this educational and entertaining event.

LOCAL EVENT RAISES OVER $5,000 FOR PARIS TERROR VICTIMS

Donations to help  victims of the French terrorist attacks are being accepted through Friday on the Adventures by the Book website

by Sárka-Jonae Miller, Ask an Author columnist

On the drive home to San Diego from an event in Los Angeles, USA Today best-selling author Jennifer Coburn and Adventure by the Book owner Susan E. McBeth came up with an idea to throw a fundraiser benefiting the French Red Cross. The two women had recently taken trips to Paris and wanted to do something to help the victims of the November 13 attacks.

By the time they arrived home, they already had four authors of Paris-themed books on board, according to Coburn. Eight days later on November 22, the Je Suis Paris fundraiser was realized and proceeds exceeded the initial goal of $5,000.

THE AUDACIOUS WOMAN: THE 47TH NAACP IMAGE AWARD FOR LITERATURE NOMINEE

By Dennis Moore

November 17, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) - The Audacious Woman, an inspirational and empowering book by Pamela Toussaint, which this writer had the honor and privilege of reviewing for the East County Magazine in San Diego, has been nominated for the 47th NAACP Image Award in Literature. Toussaint is following in the footsteps of Gregory Reed’s Obama Talks Back and Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow, who actually won the award, and this writer also had the distinct pleasure of writing the review of those books for the East County Magazine just prior to their winning. Hopefully, we will be able to say the same for Toussaint.

COWBOYS, INDIANS AND CLIFFHANGERS: ALONG THE TRAIL OF NOVELIST MARSHAL SOUTH ON NOV. 21

East County News Service

November 6, 2015 (Anza-Borrego) – Discover the Old West of Western novelist/artist Marshal South with historian and travel writer Diana Lindsay along the Butterfield Overland Stage Route on Saturday, November 21st.  This one-of-a-kind journey aboard a California Overland Adventures vehicle begins at 9 a.m. at the Carrizo station and ends with an optional hike to the relics of South’s homestead atop Ghost Mountain.

South promoted Anza-Borrego’s history in the 1930s and ‘40s , as well as Native American culture and desert lore through his cliffhanger western novels reminiscent of Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour.  On this excursion back in time, you’ll travel the old stage route and explore the places that inspired South and still echo with the past.
