March 7, 2019 (Alpine) –The Children’s Nature Retreat in Alpine is temporarily closed due to damage done by unknown intruders. In a letter to supporters, the retreat’s owners sent photos of damage and revealed that on Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m., they discovered that three fences had been cut with a heavy-duty tool, rolled back and laid on the ground, allowing sheep, donkeys and African animals to be released from their enclosures.

February 19, 2019 (San Diego) -- On Wednesday, February 13th, program clients from McAlister Institute’s Group Home East, a short-term residential treatment program for teens, funded by the County of San Diego, Health & Human Services Agency, distributed Valentine’s Day cards to homeless individuals at the First Presbyterian Church on Date Street in San Diego. The distribution was an anonymous act of service, human kindness, and an expression of compassion for others.

February 5, 2019 (San Diego) - McAlister Institute, a non-profit organization in East County that helps bring life-saving services in substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, life skills education, and vocational training to individuals and families regardless of their inability to pay, has received an $11,195 grant from Las Patronas to fund a wellness courtyard at the organization’s Kiva Learning Center for Women and Children (Kiva).
Kiva, which receives its primary funding through contract with the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency, was established in 1981. With its founding, McAlister Institute became one of the first five organizations in the nation and the first in San Diego County to develop a residential program that allows women to live with their children in a safe, instructive, and supportive environment while they receive treatment.

February 5, 2019 (San Diego) -- St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC) of El Cajon partnered with The Marine Room to host the annual Tea by the Sea celebration on Saturday, January 19, 2019. The event hosted 210 guests and raised more than $19,000 to fund SMSC’s art program, where students can explore their creativity through a variety of artistic mediums at Sophie’s Gallery.

January 18, 2019 (Lakeside) – Kathryn Anne Kennedy, 70, was found in Ocotillo Wells shortly after 11 a.m. this morning, Lt. David Perkins with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department has confirmed to ECM.
“A concerned citizen saw her sitting on the steps of the market at a campground in Ocotillo Wells and called for a welfare check because she seemed disoriented,” Lt. Perkins told ECM. Law enforcement officers identified her as the missing woman and transported her back to Lakeside to be reunited with friends, after making sure she did not appear to have any physical injuries.
“She was shaken, hungry and tired,” says Jill Barto, who helped organize a search for the missing woman and received word via a phone call with the good news.
