MCDONALD’S PARTNERING WITH SDPOA TO HONOR JEREMY HENWOOD APRIL 11

Fundraiser to Support SDPOA Widows and Orphans Fund

April 9, 2012 (San Diego) – After the tragic shooting and death of SDPD Officer Jeremy Henwood, it was discovered that his last stop was the McDonald’s located at 3879 Fairmont Ave., where he bought cookies for a young boy.  In honor of the life of Officer Henwood, the SDPOA is partnering with Phil Palumbo, the owner and operator of that McDonald’s to raise funds for the SDPOA Widows and Orphans Fund.  A portion of the proceeds from purchases made between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on April 11 will benefit the fund.

PROJECT WILDLIFE HOSTS WILDLIFE BABY SHOWER APRIL 14

 
April 8, 2012 (San Diego) -- Each Spring and Summer when local wildlife nest and birth their young, Project Wildlife receives and cares for thousands of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife countywide until they are ready for release.
 
Come experience the wildlife “baby season” at the organization’s third annual Wildlife Baby Shower. The event will be held on Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Project Wildlife’s Triage Center, 887 ½ Sherman St., San Diego 92110.

LA MESA SEEKS DONATIONS FOR FLAG DAY PARADE JUNE 2

 

April 8, 2012 -- La Mesa's Flag Day Parade committee is raising funds for this year's annual parade on Saturday, June 2nd. Our financial goal is $15,000 which will offset operational expenses, including transportation costs for school marching bands, public address equipment, and traffic control set up.

MISS RANCHO JAMUL PAGEANT WINNERS CROWNED

 

April 5, 2012 -- Miss Rancho Jamul, Stephanie Grecco and Miss Teen Rancho Jamul, Gigi Gauthier we crowned Saturday, March 31 at the pageant held at the Steele Canyon High School Theater.

Stephanie Grecco is a 21 year old student at Cuyamaca College, and is currently working toward her Associates Degree in Music Industry Studies. She plans to attain her Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance. Stephanie enjoys singing, song writing, playing piano and guitar, and hopes to one day impact lives with the music she creates.

CUB SCOUTS FROM RANCHO SAN DIEGO-JAMUL GET UP CLOSE LOOK AT MCAS MIRAMAR

April 4, 2012 (Rancho San Diego) – Cub Scouts and their families got a tour yesterday of at MCAS Miramar.  They were able to see demonstrations of the K-9 dogs used to detect explosives.  They were also shown how a fire is fought should a crash occur on the runway.  Finally, they were shown how ordinance is detonated via a robot and if necessary with highly trained Marines in the field.

FIREFIGHTER BOOT DRIVE TUESDAY

 
April 2, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Tomorrow,  April  3rd,  firefighters  across  the  county  will  be  at  various intersections collecting donations for the Burn Institute’s “Give Burns The Boot” fundraiser.  Money raised benefits the Burn Institute’s burn prevention programs in the County.
 
Firefighters  from  Heartland  Fire  &  Rescue  in  El  Cajon,  will  be  at  the intersection of Greenfield Drive and East Main Street from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. collecting donations!

April 2, 2012 (San Diego) – San Diego has become a hotbed of human trafficking and it includes more than undocumented immigrants. Law enforcement have identified San Diego as an international gateway for sex trafficking and one of the 13 cities in the nation with the highest incidence of child prostitution, including local teens. Forced marriages and modern slavery are also critical issues. Worldwide, trafficking is an estimated $40 billion industry affecting every country.

Donna Williams Selected as Best in Law Enforcement for Child Abuse Victims
 
March 25, 2012 (Huntsville, AL) -- The National Children's Advocacy Center (NCAC) presented the Outstanding Service Award in Law Enforcement to Donna Williams, who served as a Detective with the San Diego Police Department from 1989 until her unfortunate death in 2011. Detective Cindy Brady accepted the award on behalf of Williams. The honor came at the 28th National Symposium on Child Abuse in Huntsville, Alabama.  Detective Williams’ daughter, De Kenya Williams, was in attendance at the award ceremony.

There are two ways you can help.

On Monday, April 2 from 3-10 p.m., the Alpine Tavern & Grill at 2502 Alpine Blvd. in Alpine will host “Beers for Bill,” donating 20% of proceeds to help pay for Bill’s medical expenses.

March 18, 2012 (Palomar) – Friends of Palomar Mountain State Park announced this week that they have reached and exceeded their fundraising goal to fill the budget gap between the park’s operating expenses and revenues. The group received nearly $72,000 in pledges—far more than the $60,000 sought.

EL CAJON ANIMAL SHELTER NEEDS BATH MATS FOR DOGS

 
March 9, 2012 (El Cajon) -- The El Cajon Animal Shelter has sent out a request through its new Facebook page to fill a need of rubber backed bath mats for the outdoor dog runs. The dog runs are floor heated but the dogs need some padding. 
 
“If everyone brought in one mat that could go a long way in satisfying their need,” says Peggy Buffo. Sizes needed are 2 x 3 feet or 3 x 4 feet.

March 6, 2012 (San Diego's East County) -- Sprites of East County, a mother-daughter philanthropic organization, will host its annual benefit on March 24 at Steele Canyon High School, 12440 Campo Road in Spring Valley.  The theme of this year's event is "Sprites Revolution." The annual benefit includes a silent auction, fashion show featuring apparel from Fashion Valley stores, dance performances, and a delicious catered lunch.  All proceeds benefit their charities.

OCCUPELLA WOMEN'S CHORUS CHANGES LYRICS TO SEND MESSAGE

The “Occupella Chorus” sings familiar tunes, but rewords the lyrics to convey the message of social and economic injustice. WILD CATS FROM SAN NICOLAS ISLAND FIND NEW HOME AT RAMONA SHELTER

 

February 27, 2012 (Ramona) – San Nicolas Island is best known as the setting for the novel Island of the Blue Dolphin.  But the isle in California’s Channel Islands was also used by the Navy—and a colony of wild cats believe to be descended from pets of naval personnel  were hunting wild birds and lizards, endangering native species including foxes. 

The Navy was prepared to kill all of the feral cats—until the Humane Society and the Fund for Animals stepped in.

“DREAM DOGS” COLUMNIST/ SHELTER OWNER NEEDS HELP TO PAY EMERGENCY VET BILLS DUE TO DOG ATTACK

February 22, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) -- ECM columnist Cate Sacks, owner of the local shelter rescue and dog training company, Shelter Dogs to Dream Dogs, is no stranger to odd animal antics. But bad behavior hit close to home when Scooter, her seven-pound pet Maltese, was mauled by a stranger dog while out in public with the family.

The attack left a two-inch hole in Scooter's chest cavity and lungs. He also almost lost his eye and more.

COMMUNITY SEEKS HELP FOR CHILD WITH SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITION; FAMILY NEEDS CAR FOR MEDICAL VISITS

February 21, 2012 (Jacumba) – Three-year-old Destiny Pierce is a survivor. Born with no trachea and with organs on the wrong side of her body, she defied doctors’ predictions that she would not live 24 hours and survived heart surgery. 

"Mr. Pierce left his job and stopped his education of becoming a nurse so that he could stay at home and take care of his little angel, Destiny," 

said Lorrie Ostrander, a Jacumba resident who started a fundraiser to help the family in this small high-desert town in East County. Anthony Pierce needs a car to transport his "miracle" daughter to her medical appointments.
