GROUND BEEF RECALL EXPANDS

December 4, 2018 (Washington D.C.)  Over 250 people nationwide have fallen ill from salmonella tied to ground beef, including 66 cases in California, the Centers for Disease Control reports.  Over 12 million pounds of ground beef have been recalled, all packaged between July 26 and Sept.7, but health officials warn that some products may still be in consumers freezers.

Following an October recall, a second recall issued this week adds another 5 million pounds of potentially tainted products. The tainted beef was sold at major retailers including Walmart, Sams Club, Sprouts, Ralphs, Food 4 Less and others.  View the retailer list here

December 3, 2018 (El Cajon) -- Kaiser Permanente Southern California announced a $6 million, five-year Community Mental Health and Wellness Initiative with an immediate Local Partnership Grant (LPG) grant allocation of $1.28 million to combat and improve access to mental health services. The initial grant allocation is funding a group of two-year grants to support 16 nonprofit community partners working to improve mental health and wellness in under-resourced Southern California communities.

CDC WARNING: DO NOT EAT ANY ROMAINE LETTUCE DUE TO NATIONWIDE E-COLI CONTAMINATION

November 20, 2018 (Washington D.C.)  Consumers in the U.S. should not eat any romaine lettuce; restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell any forms of romainlettuce including whole heads, chopped, hearts of romaine, or mixed salads containing romaine lettuceincluding spring mix and Caesar salads.

 

That’s the warning issued today by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration due to a nationwide outbreak of a virulent form of E.coli linked to romaine that has sickened 32 people in 11 states, including 10 cases in California.Nearly a third of those cases (13) required hospitalization.  An additional 18 cases have occurred in Canada.

MEDICARE AND MEDICAID CUTS PROPOSED BY GOP BUDGET

October 15, 2018 (Washington D.C.) — A budget proposed by House Republicans would cut Medicare, the federal healthcare program for senior citizens and the disabled, by $537 billion.

That violates a campaign promise made by Donald Trump when he was running for President and pledged, “Republicans believe that a Medicare program that was created for seniors and paid for by seniors their entire lives should always be protected and preserved.”

AXES RECALLED BY WALMART

October 10, 2018 (Washington D.C.) – Walmart is recalling over a quarter of million axes sold nationwide after two reports of axe heads coming off the handles, causing minor injuries, the U.S. Product Safety Commission reports. The axes, made by Ozark Trail, were sold between January 2017 and July 2018 .

Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host “Fall into Healthy Habits for the Holiday Season and Beyond,” an informational program about how to navigate the holiday season for ultimate health and safety, from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24. The program is part of the library’s “Wellness Wednesday” series, normally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. Advance RSVP is not necessary. Handouts will be available.
