February 11, 2018 (San Diego) - No. 18 San Diego State had trouble with 10th-ranked UC Davis’ physicality in the first half and dug itself too big of a hole in a 13-8 loss in the fifth-place game Sunday afternoon at the Triton Invitational in nearby La Jolla. SDSU fell to 4-4 on the season, while UCD improved to 7-5.

UC Davis jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Paola Vizcarra found daylight and got the Aztecs on the board. Maddy Parenteau later made it a one-goal deficit for San Diego State with 4:38 left on the clock, but the Aggie tacked on two more goals to take a commanding 5-2 lead after one period.

UC Davis continued to use its size to its advantage in the second period, scoring four more times while holding SDSU to a single goal. Delaney Parks was credited with a goal 72 seconds before the halftime horn went off to get the Aztecs to within 9-3 of UCD.

The Aggies continued to put the pressure on San Diego State, finding the back of the cage three more times in the next eight minutes. Unfortunately for the Aztecs, they would be the beneficiary of a Hannah Carrillo goal, the only scoring strike of the third period for SDSU.

UC Davis increased its lead to 13-4 with 6:05 remaining in regulation, which gave San Diego State plenty of time to mount a comeback. The hill, however, was too steep for the Aztecs to climb despite outscoring the Aggies, 4-0, in the final six minutes.

THE NOTE

San Diego State finished in sixth place at the 16-team Triton Invitational. It marks the Aztecs’ best finish at the local tournament since 2013, when it came in fourth place.

STAT OF THE GAME

Emily Bennett led the team in scoring for the third time in four Triton Invitational games with her three goals. It was the second hat trick of her career.
