October 14, 2015 (La Mesa) –The bodies of Marshelle Newby, 56, and a second female were found inside a home on Avoyer Place in Casa de Oro near Mt. Helix Wednesday morning.  Newby worked as a legal secretary at the District Attorney’s criminal division for the past 23 years.

10 News reports that family and a neighbor identified the second body as Newby’s 16-year-old special needs granddaughter, Emily, whom she has raised as her own.

Tanya Sierra, public information officer for DA Bonnie Dumanis, stated, “Marshelle Newby was an outstanding DA employee for 23 years. Our office is grieving and our hearts go out to her family and friends,” KUSI reports.

October 14, 2015 (Alpine)--The 2nd Annual Alpine Education Foundation Punkin Chunkin is set forSunday, Nov. 8th, at 10 a.m. at Joan MacQueen Middle School. This family friendly educational fundraiser to benefit Alpine schools requires teams to create a launching device to chunk their pumpkins for accuracy and distance while competing for nearly $2,000 in cash prizes for distance and accuracy. Entry fee is $100. Admission is free.

October 13, 2015 (Sacramento) – Governor Jerry Brown has signed the  nation’s strictest standard for use of antibiotics in livestock. 

The new law addresses concerns raised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which estimates 2 million people in the U.S. are infected with drug resistant bacteria,  and 23,000 die each year of these superbugs. Public health officials believe the overuse of antibiotics in cattle, pigs and other livestock in meat and dairy production endangers the public health.

October 13, 2015 (Alpine) – The bodies of a 43-year-old woman and a man of unknown age were found by firefighters inside a burned home in the 700 block of South Grade Road in Alpine.  The Alpine Community Network reports that the woman was a mother of three.

October 14, 2015 (San Diego)--It’s official: County Supervisor Bill Horn won’t get a chance to vote on Lilac Hills Ranch, the massive housing project proposal in Valley Center, about a mile from property Horn owns.

In a message sent to constituents Tuesday, Horn wrote that being forced to recuse himself signifies the chipping away at the foundation of American values.

Horn had sought the input of the state Fair Political Practices Commission over whether he should take part in the Board of Supervisors’ vote on the Lilac Hills project later this month, following a Voice of San Diego investigation that revealed he might have a conflict of interest over the project.

City of La Mesa Food Drive October 17

October 13, 2015 (La Mesa) -- The City of La Mesa Human Relations Advisory Commission is sponsoring a food drive to benefit the San Diego Food Bank. The food drive will be held on Saturday, October 17, from 8:00 am to noon in the municipal parking lot (Farmers Market site) at 8130 Allison Avenue, along Date Avenue. The drive-thru drop off will be fast and convenient – no need to get out of the car.

October 9, 2015 (Santee)--What appeared to be nearly a done deal---San Diego craft brewer Karl Strauss relocating its main production and corporate headquarters to Santee’s Town Center---may not happen after all.

Matt Rattner, who co-founded Karl Strauss in 1989 and its president, said the company is keeping its options open.

“There’s no deal yet,” Rattner said recently. “We just received a proposal to go to Otay Mesa--and we’ve also talked with the cities of Vista and San Marcos.”

October 11, 2015 (Washington D.C.)—Seeking to help hundreds of thousands of young people who are currently a part of the foster care system and the tens of thousands who leave the system each year, Reps. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) and Jim McDermott (D-Wash.)—Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth,  have introduced H.R. 3641, the “Health Insurance for Former Foster Youth Act of 2015.”  The measure would close a loophole and guarantee that foster youth will still receive health insurance through Medicaid until they turn 26 years old,  regardless of their state of residence.

October 10, 2015 (Sacramento) - Senate Bill 287, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Safety Act, has been signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown.  The bill was authored by State Senator Ben Hueso, a Democrat representing San Diego and southern portions of East County.
