July 20, 2016 (St. Louis) – Thanks to rain, the Padres and Cardinals are now playing two games today, the first of which is a morning (for us) matinee for game two which should’ve been last night.  Colin Rea started for San Diego against Cardinals ace Carlos Martinez.

Clearly the Padres were having baseball withdrawals after no game last night, because they got started right away.  Ryan Schimpf hit a two-run blast in the first to give San Diego a homer in 17 straight games and a 2-0 lead over the redbirds.

The Cardinals got to within one on Matt Holliday’s solo homer in the second and the Padres’ lead was cut to one at 2-1.

And then it was gone.  Jedd Gyorko must really hate that the Padres gave him away, because he knocked a two-run homer in the fourth to put the Cards ahead of the Pads 3-2.  The 441-foot homer was the Cards’ second in four innings.  They’d take that score to the end to take the day portion of the doubleheader 4-2.

Yadier Molina gave the Cards a two-run lead with a solo shot in the sixth and the lead was 4-2 redbirds.

Game three is still at its scheduled time tonight at 5:15.  Paul Clemens makes his Padres debut as a starter against Jaime Garcia for St. Louis.
