Four Aztecs competing at Arizona tournament this weekend

September 23, 2017 (Tucson) - The San Diego State men’s tennis team continued play at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday at the Wildcat Invitational, with four Aztecs competing in singles and doubles at Ventana Golf and Racquet Club.

Sophomore David Hough recorded SDSU’s lone victory in singles play, defeating Northern Arizona’s Chris Steele by a 6-4, 6-4 count in the Navy consolation bracket, where he will face Tom Fisher, another NAU adversary, for ninth place on Sunday morning.

Fellow classmate Nicholas Mitchell was not fortunate in his consolation match, however, falling short against Andres Reyes of Arizona, 6-4, 7-5, in the Navy north bracket. With his result, the Ojai, California, native will lock horns with Grand Canyon’s Frederick Grant on Sunday.

Over in the Cardinal consolation bracket, Jan Kirchhoff experienced a similar fate against Sebastian Eguez of Northern Arizona, dropping a 6-3, 7-5 decision. The Aztecs freshman will battle Arizona’s Shoti Meparidze to close out the weekend on Sunday.

Likewise, fellow newcomer Ignacio Martinez was dealt a 6-1, 6-3 defeat by New Mexico State’s Stijn Dehaan in the Cardinal south consolation bracket, before crossing paths with another Aggie competitor on Sunday morning in Luis Flores.

In doubles play, the No. 1 SDSU pairing of Hough and Mitchell split their two encounters on Saturday in the Cardinal main draw, dispatching Grand Canyon’s Valentine Lang and Gregoire Balenci by a 6-4 tally in the quarterfinals after receiving a first-round bye on Friday. However, the Aztec tandem could not sustain the momentum in their semifinal match with New Mexico State’s Dehaan and Mauricio Benitez, ultimately dropping a 6-1 decision. Up next for the duo is a consolation clash with Fresno State’s Jeremy Moser and Cagatay Soke.

In addition, the SDSU duo of Kirchhoff and Martinez was victimized by the Steele/Eguez combo from Northern Arizona by an identical 6-1 on the consolation side of the bracket. They will tangle with Arizona Christian’s Enzo Douillac and Jesse Miritello on Sunday.
