Aztecs top Titans in home dual

March 23, 2018 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team returned home on Friday, March 23, where it claimed a 5-2 victory over Cal State Fullerton. With today’s match, the Aztecs logged their eighth home win of the season.
SDSU got back to its winning ways in doubles action by claiming all three doubles matches. Freshmen Nnena Nadozie and Abbie Mulbarger downed opponents Caisey Lee Emery and Danielle Pham, 6-0, on court three while junior Jenny Moinard and sophomore Mia Smith overcame Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin, 7-5, on court one to claim the doubles point for SDSU. Seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz also took a doubles win on Friday, going 7-6 (4) over CSUF’s Genevieve Zeidan and Masako Makiba.
In singles play, CSUF responded with a point of their own in the sixth seed as Makiba topped Mia Smith 6-1, 6-4. Soon after, Mulbarger finished with a second win for the day, defeating Emery, 6-3, 6-4, on court five to bring the day’s score to 2-1 Aztecs.
On court three, Moinard routed Portalatin 6-4, 6-3 to add another point to the SDSU total, but it was senior Jana Buth whose match decided the dual as she took No. 125 Zeidan to three sets to claim a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory. Though the Aztecs had already secured their win, Diaz finished off a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Nuno to tally a fifth SDSU victory. The Titans were able to secure one last point in the final singles match of the day as Luxizi Meng managed a three-set, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nadozie on court four.
THE NOTE
With today’s match, the Aztecs gain their 10th doubles point of the season.

Jana Buth’s singles victory over No. 125 Genevieve Zeidan marks her first singles win over a ranked opponent this season (1-3).
UP NEXT
Now 8-8 on the season, the Aztecs hit the road two weekends in a row as they travel for their first conference match at UNLV on Friday, March 30 at 10 a.m. and visit Long Beach State on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
