July 3, 2016 (San Diego) – Over there, over there, send the word, send the word over there, that the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming, the drums rum-tumming everywhere…the Pads and Yanks finished up their series on the eve of the Fourth of July and it’s almost like they wanted me to open this recap by singing Over There with this scheduling.  Andrew Cashner, recently reinstated from the DL, started for the Padres today against Chad Green for New York.

But of course, this game was a sweep opportunity, so the Yankees took the lead first in the second on Ronald Torreyes’ sacrifice double play ball that scored Didi Gregorius and the Bronx Bombers took a 1-0 lead.

But Yangervis Solarte saved the Padres’ necks yet again with a solo homer in the San Diego half of the second to tie the game at one.

That didn’t faze Gregorius.  He hit a solo homer of his own in the fourth to give the Yankees the lead again, 2-1.

It looked like the Padres had a chance until the eighth when Mark Teixeira hit a solo home run to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

It got worse.  Brett Gardner singled in the ninth, scoring Jacoby Ellsbury and the Yanks went up 4-1.  Teixera hit another home run, this time it was worth two runs and the Yankees led 6-1.

Alex Dickerson hit a two-run homer in the home half of the ninth to soften the wound of yet another missed sweep opportunity, but the Padres would still lose 6-3.  The Friars once again cannot sweep.  This is getting old for me, too.

The Padres travel to Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks.  Game one is tomorrow at 6:10 p.m.

In transaction news, Alexei Amarista has been optioned to AAA El Paso.  The Padres have also signed their first ever Asian player, 19-year-old Taiwanese pitcher Wen-Hua Sung.
