SDSU PROFESSOR'S PORTRAIT OF HOMELESS MAN FEATURED IN SMITHSONIAN

SDSU art professor and artist Neil Shigley’s portrait, "Michael 59," will be displayed in at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. March 23, 2013 through Feb. 23, 2014.

Shigley’s work was selected as a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition and sent to Washington D.C. where it will be included in the tri-ennial exhibition. "Michael 59" was selected as one of 48 works from more than 3,000 entries in a variety of visual arts media. The juried exhibition of portraits includes works created from both traditional media like oil paintings, drawings and photographs as well as more surprising materials such as rice, glitter, thread and video.

June 24, 2012 (San Diego) -- Ironically, the only president who didn’t live in Washington was Washington. During George Washington’s administration the nation's capital was situated in Philadelphia.
 
In 1788 Maryland and Virginia in 1789 donated a hundred square miles of land to the American government to be used for a capital city. George Washington chose the territory contributed by Maryland, and title to Virginia’s land was returned to that state. Before Washington, D.C., was established, the early congresses had met in Philadelphia, Lancaster, and York, Pennsylvania; Princeton and Trenton, New Jersey; Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland; and New York City.

8TH GRADE STUDENT/PARENT WASHINGTON, D.C. TO NYC EDUCATIONAL TOUR SCHEDULED FOR 2013 SPRING BREAK, MEETING MAY 2

 
April 23, 2012 (Alpine) -- On Wednesday, May 2 at 6:00 pm at the Alpine Elementary School auditorium, a registration meeting and power point presentation will be held to share information with East County students and parents about next year’s annual educational East Coast tour. The historical and educational destinations on this itinerary are Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Gettysburg, and New York City.  Fundraising opportunities will also be discussed.

February 25, 2012 (La Mesa) -- One of the nation's leading performers in the storytelling revival, David Novak, will be hosting a free family performance at the La Mesa Library, 8074 Allison Ave. The event will take place on Saturday, March 3 at 10:30 a.m. and is sponsored by Young Audiences and is offered in celebration of Read Across America, the National Education Association's annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading.
