SIGNS OF THE TIMES: TWO DOWNTOWN EL CAJON BUSINESSES CLOSE

By Robert Gehr

Photography: Robert Gehr

July 23, 2020 (El Cajon) -- On my walk this morning, I noticed two businesses in downtown El Cajon closed and nearly emptied of furnishings.  Both Rock a Betties Beauty Salon and Thrill Seekers have closed these locations, with rent signs in the windows.

Thrill Seekers, a retail establishment at 164 East Main Street, still has a website. A second location at 1421 Woodside Ave. Suite C, Santee remains open for customers. The owner of Thrill Seekers told ECM's editor that relocating to Santee was not related to the pandemic and that his business is "doing just fine."

State and county mandated closures due to the COVID-19 epidemic may have played a role in the permanent loss of Rock A Betties Beauty Salon at 158 E. Main St. El Cajon, a long-time fixture in the community. The shop has has taken its website down and the phone is disconnected.

ECONOMIC ROUNDTABLE EXPERTS SEE MODERATE GROWTH IN 2014

Source: San Diego County News Service

January 22, 2014 (San Diego)--Economists and other experts predicted moderate growth ahead in 2014 at the 30th Annual San Diego County Economic Roundtable Friday morning.

Speakers described housing prices stabilizing in San Diego and unemployment rates continuing to drop.  These were just a few of the insights shared at the event, which again brought together experts to talk about big picture questions on the local, state and national economy.

The states of the job and real estate markets are always a big topic, and experts this year also offered overviews of the Affordable Care Act and how the manufacturing industry is doing. An estimated 400 people attended the free event at University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice.

LABOR DAY POINTS TO PONDER

On behalf of East County Magazine, we wish you and your family a very Happy Labor Day!

The first  national Labor Day was adopted by Congress in 1894 and signed into law by President Taft, following a tradition began by  New York in 1884 followed by several other states. Today we honor the contributions of American workers to our nation.

This year is a special occasion, since it marks the centennial celebration of the U.S. Department of Labor.  The first Labor Department Secretary was a former coal miner who helped found the United Mine Workers Union.

Founded 100 years ago in 1913, the Department o f Labor has helped usher in many reforms and protections for workers that modern-day people may take for granted--such as  the 40-hour work week and overtime pay, worker’ compensation for ill and  injured employees,  the Equal Pay act for women, laws to prevent discrimination based on race, outlawing child labor, enabling those with disabilities, and adopting OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Act to protect workers from dangers in the work place.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE REACHES FOUR-YEAR LOW

Stock market rallies in response to news

By Jonathan Goetz

The jobless recovery is adding jobs, slowly and steadily. April job numbers released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show the US unemployment rate at 7.5%, the lowest rate in four years. The main job growth was in retail and food services however, and not the same high-paying industries that saw major job losses in the Great Recession.

On Friday, the Dow responded to the positive hiring news by reaching 15,000 for the first time before closing at 14,972, up .9% from the opening bell. The S&P ended 1% higher, also breaking the record by reaching the 1,600 mark. Growth in US markets was spread over most industries, including the beleaguered steel industry, with three stocks closing higher for every one stock closing lower.

POLITICAL REFLECTIONS: PAUL RYAN—MITT DOUBLES DOWN ON THE RIGHT

By Mark Gabrish Conlan

August 14, 2012 (San Diego) --
Up until presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney named Wisconsin Congressmember Paul Ryan as his running mate on August 10, the safe bet seemed to be that Romney was going to base his general-election strategy on “a referendum, not a choice.” For one thing, that’s Politics 101: as pioneering American political scientist V. O. Key said in the 1960’s, Americans vote on issues but “retrospectively and negatively.”

REPS. HUNTER, BILBRAY INTRODUCE "BUY AMERICAN" RESOLUTION FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY

July 1, 2012 (Washington, D.C). —In 1960, manufacturing accounted for 28 percent of jobs in the United States. Today, manufacturing accounts for only 9 percent of jobs.  “

This dramatic decrease has limited job opportunities for all Americans. Worse yet, with the globalization of manufactured goods, the U.S. consumer has become desensitized to the “Made In America” label,” Congressman Duncan Hunter said. To bring attention to the declining manufacturing sector and promote U.S.-made goods, representatives Brian Bilbray (R-CA) and Hunter (R-CA) have introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate the first week of July as “Buy American Week.”

INGENUITY OF SAN DIEGANS CAN EASE GAS CRISIS, DR. SHIRLEY WEBER SAYS

Assembly Candidate says accelerating production of San Diego-made biofuels will ease pain at the pump and put hundreds back to work

March 2, 2012 (San Diego) – As oil prices hit a nine-month high this week, Dr. Shirley Weber, candidate for Assembly in San Diego’s southeastern 79th district, said that the ingenuity of San Diegans could have a hand in resolving the crisis.

“San Diego is home to groundbreaking research on biofuels, especially those developed from algae,” Dr. Weber said. “We need to accelerate the production being done here so that next time oil prices spike or a foreign regime tries to hold our economy hostage, we are in control of our own energy future. Accelerated biofuel production would not only ease pain at the pump, it would put hundreds of San Diegans back to work in good paying jobs in a growing sector.”

September 13, 2010 (San Diego) -- Since it is clear banks and brokers would rather lay people off then hire them, it is time the U.S. Government provide entry-level jobs in public service to stimulate the economy. This worked before, when the CCC and WPA provided millions of unemployed US citizens with jobs and training that helped the U.S. out of the Great Depression.
