May 21, 2011 (Alpine) – The San Diego chapter of the Hells Angels, headquartered in EL Cajon, is celebrating its 45th anniversary this weekend. The group will hold a “South Run” event centered in Alpine May 20-22.  Thousands of motorcyclists are expected to participate.

May 6, 2011 (Alpine) – Viejas Outlet Center will host Alpine’s biggest festival, the 14^th annual Sage & Songbirds Festival & Garden Tour on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8.  The theme for this year's festival, which includes live butterfly releases, is "Just Wing It."

A tour of residential gardens with butterfly and songbird-friendly habitats will also be held from May 6-8, with proceeds benefiting CHIRP, a non-profit organization dedicated to preservation and enjoyment of birds, butterflies and other creatures through hands-on and interactive programs and gardens.

March 10, 2011 (Alpine) – A gardener working behind Alpine Pizza and Pasta in the vicinity of Alpine Blvd. and Arnold Way yesterday shortly before 10 a.m. was attacked by an "aggressive" swarm of bees and stung repeatedly on the head and neck, Alpine Fire Chief Bill Paskle reports.

March 1, 2011 (Alpine) – Marquin Anthony Hendrix, 61, a suspect wanted for the stabbing death of his wife yesterday, has been shot and killed in Alpine after advancing on Sheriff’s deputies with a shovel. The Sheriff’s office has not released the name of the suspect or the officers involved in the shooting last night. However San Diego Police have identified him as Hendrix, ECM news partner 10 News reports. ECM received independent confirmation of the victim’s identity from an Alpine resident close to the scene.
 

February 18, 2011 (Alpine) – A solo vehicle spun out of control, rolling overall several times shortly before 10 p.m. tonight on eastbound I-8 just west of Willows Road in Alpine. According to the California Highway Patrol website, one patient is bleeding from the head.

In addition CHP has received a report of a mudslide or rockslide on Sunrise Highway near mile marker 17. A separate caller reported a boulder on the southbound side of Sunrise Highway near old Highway 80.

GUHSD BOARD VOTES TO MOVE FORWARD WITH DESIGN PLANS AND AVOID DELAY….FOR NOW

February 11, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – “Please keep your promise and build the new High School for us,” 12-year-old Alpine student Dominique Markowitz implored the Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) board during last night’s meeting, echoing the sentiments of nearly everyone in an overflow crowd that filled three rooms.

Trustee Priscilla Schreiber successfully fought to prevent the Board from approving a proposal by the Superintendent to delay construction bids indefinitely. She also pushed fellow Board members to unanimously authorize submitting site design plans to the state’s Division of State Architects review board. The Board voted 5-0 to approve several other components of the Superintendent’s proposal to keep the project moving forward, but language to delay construction bidding indefinitely was removed from the resolution adopted.

We understand that there may be (again) a declared "delay" of the 12th GUHSD HS startup. This will effectively kill this project forever. -- Bill Weaver
