BAJA BLOG: LA SALINA CANTINA IN LA MISION, A REAL MEXICAN CANTINA

Story and photos by Susan A Mahalick

April 20, 2015 (Baja, Mexico)--Located as an exit off the toll road, or Cuota, is La Salina at Km 73. Two exits after crossing the bridge with the estuary to the left as you travel south from Rosarito is a public beach with palapas to the right. It is Easter weekend which traditionally starts the official camping on the beaches, no matter the weather, as Mexicali, Tijuana and Tecate empty out for all the free camping in this part of Baja. Here the fee is $500 pesos, around $4 at the current exchange rate, per vehicle which accounts for this beach not being overcrowded.

SAN DIEGO/TIJUANA ONE OF TOP 10 SITES BEING CONSIDERED FOR 2024 OLYMPIC BID

April 27, 2013 (San Diego) – Mayor Bob Filner’s efforts to win the bid to host the 2024 Olympics in our border region is getting serious consideration from the U.S. Olympic Committee.  The San Diego/Tijuana team is on the list of top 10 cities under consideration.

The Mayor announced his idea earlier this year at the opening of the San Diego’s new Tijuana office, alongside Mayor Carlos Bustamante, who is wholeheartedly behind the idea and committed to working together to make this happen.

“I am very serious about this proposal and clearly the U.S. Olympic Committee is paying attention,” said Mayor Bob Filner.  “Imagine the message we could send to the world in the true spirit of what the Olympics is all about, bringing together people and countries.  What better way to do it than with our neighbors south of the border?”

Mayor Bob Filner and Mayor Carlos Bustamante will soon name a top-notch committee to guide the bi-national effort.

“My vision is to gracefully transform the San Diego/Tijuana Regional economy, now 98% dependent on imported energy and 90% dependent on imported water and food -- into an economy that is prosperous and completely renewable, energy, water and food self-sufficient. Accomplishing this is our best chance to leave our children and future generations a life-support sustaining future. Becoming renewable energy, water and food self-sufficient in our region will also serve as a model that can be emulated around the world.” –Jim Bell.

SATAN’S PLAYGROUND CHRONICLES TIJUANA’S ALLURE TO THE RICH, FAMOUS & INFAMOUS DURING JAZZ AGE & PROHIBITION ERA

Satan’s Playground, By Paul J. Vanderwood (Duke University Press, Durham, NC, 2010, 392 pages.)

Book Review by Dennis Moore

December 23, 2010 (San Diego)--Paul J. Vanderwood’s Satan’s Playground chronicles the rise and fall of the tumultuous, lucrative gambling industry that developed just south of  San Diego's border with Mexico in the early 20th century. As prohibitions against liquor, horse racing, gambling, and prostitution swept the United States, the vice industries flourished in and around Tijuana to the extent that reformers came to call the town “Satan’s Playground”-- unintentionally increasing its licentious allure to Hollywood stars and other celebrities of the era.
