LOCAL EVENT RAISES OVER $5,000 FOR PARIS TERROR VICTIMS

Donations to help  victims of the French terrorist attacks are being accepted through Friday on the Adventures by the Book website

by Sárka-Jonae Miller, Ask an Author columnist

On the drive home to San Diego from an event in Los Angeles, USA Today best-selling author Jennifer Coburn and Adventure by the Book owner Susan E. McBeth came up with an idea to throw a fundraiser benefiting the French Red Cross. The two women had recently taken trips to Paris and wanted to do something to help the victims of the November 13 attacks.

By the time they arrived home, they already had four authors of Paris-themed books on board, according to Coburn. Eight days later on November 22, the Je Suis Paris fundraiser was realized and proceeds exceeded the initial goal of $5,000.

FROM THE FIRE CHIEF'S CORNER: WHEN BLACK FRIDAY COMES!

Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

November 23, 2015 (San Diego's East County) - Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, when holiday gift buying begins.  Sales offering big discounts lure customers into stores, often beginning in the early hours of the morning.  “Unfortunately, Black Friday is a day when shoppers may become victims of crimes and injuries,” reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.

PRODUCE PICKS: THANKSGIVING FEAST AND HOLIDAY RECIPES

By Greg Dunne

November 21, 2015 (East County).  It is coming up on Thanksgiving and time to eat! It is also a time for gathering with family and friends. I am a healthily-conscience eater most of the time, but on Thanksgiving the rulebook goes out the window. I am already thinking of all the yummy food that’s going to be on the dining table and without a doubt will probably eat way too much of everything. Half of what most of us eat on Thanksgiving is healthy food. Turkey, yams, green beans, and cranberries for a few - but don’t count calories, let’s just eat. There are some awesome recipes at the bottom of the article by my wife, Dianne.

MEDICAL MINUTE: STROKE PREVENTION

By Dr. Omar Ghausi

November 21, 2015 (San Diego)--On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds. The good news is that 80% of all strokes are preventable. Equally important, patients who arrive at an emergency room within 3 hours of their first symptoms tend to have less disability 3 months after a stroke than those who delayed care.

Some of the keys to managing risk factors are to control high blood pressure, eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, don’t smoke and limit alcohol use.

BAJA BLOG: VINTANGO AND QUINTO ELEMENTO IN GUADALUPE VALLEY

By Susan A Mahalick

Photos of Vintango provided by Jo Ann Martino

November 13, 2015 (Baja California, Mexico)--It was a fine fall day to visit one of my favorite winemakers, Jo Ann Knox Martino who owns Vintango. She has been making wine for six years now and this year she only put up Nebbiolo. In years previous she has done Zinfandel and a blend of  Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. She harvested 16 tons of grapes and put up 15 barrels of this wine. She still has 10 cases left of my favorite, the 2011 Zinfandel, which she poured for my friend, Rocky, and I. She is also experimenting with pomegranate wine since there are trees on the ranch. We were able to sample some of this as well and give feedback she appreciated.

BIRD TALK: BIRD BEAKS, TOOLS OF THE TRADE

By Greg Dunne

November 4, 2015 (San Diego’s East County)-- One of a bird’s most necessary tools is their beak.  A bird’s beak, or bill, is what hands are to us humans. Birds use their beaks for many different reasons. The most logical and useful need for their bill is for gathering or eating food. However, there are so many different uses between the different species of birds. Some uses we may be familiar with are nest building, feeding their young and grooming. Another use that is so important in the bird world but of which we may just take for granted is communicating.  Just as we use our mouths, birds use their beaks to communicate. While some species of parrots can mimic human voices, most birds communicate using different noises and gestures such as chirping, clicking, and singing. Beaks are also used for climbing as well as being used as a weapon.

She doesn’t emerge from the ocean, but she provides a home and business for her maker. KPBS culture reporter Angela Carone visits the world’s only naked mermaid house,” KPBS reported.

FROM THE FIRE CHIEF'S CORNER: OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!

Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

October 25, 2015 (San Diego's East County) - Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. A mammogram – the screening test for breast cancer – can help find breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat.
