October 10, 2018 (La Mesa) – Surf Rider Pizza Co. will officially open in downtown La Mesa the first week of November.  Surf Rider Pizza Co. is known for its East Coast-style pizza available whole or by the slice, fresh salads, authentic Stromboli and cheesesteaks and decadent homemade desserts from the onsite bakery. While born in the beachside communities of San Diego, the Surf Rider Pizza Co. brand continues to grow throughout the region, bringing a slice of the East Coast to San Diego.

LA MESA HEALTH CARE LIBRARY TO HOST FREE MEETING ON HEALTHY HOLIDAY EATING HABITS ON OCTOBER 24TH

Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host “Fall into Healthy Habits for the Holiday Season and Beyond,” an informational program about how to navigate the holiday season for ultimate health and safety, from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24. The program is part of the library’s “Wellness Wednesday” series, normally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. Advance RSVP is not necessary. Handouts will be available.

CHICK-FIL-A PARTNERS WITH SAN DIEGO REGIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TO HOST `LOCAL HERO FAMILY NIGHT’ ON TUESDAY, OCT. 9TH

October 8 2018 (San Diego's East County) – The 14 Chick-fil-A restaurants in San Diego County are partnering with local law enforcement agencies to host a “Local Hero Family Night” fundraiser for the annual San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive benefiting Rady Children’s Hospital - San Diego. On Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m., San Diego Chick-fil-A restaurants will donate 15 percent of event sales to law enforcement officials to purchase new teddy bears and stuffed animals for children receiving care at Rady Children’s Hospital. Chick-fil-A restaurants in the East County are located at 8200 Fletcher Parkway, La Mesa, and 9418 Mission Gorge Road, Santee.

Komen San Diego (Komen San Diego), the largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research outside of the U.S. government, will hold its sixth annual Dine Out for the Cure® on Thursday, Oct. 18. The community fundraiser will take place at local restaurants, bakeries and coffeehouses across our region, including numerous East County eateries. Each restaurant will donate 10 to 25 percent of their sales to support free mammograms, financial assistance, breast cancer research and public policy. Komen San Diego hopes to raise $35,000 this year.

BEWARE OF DRAGON’S BREATH AND OTHER LIQUID NITROGEN SNACKS AND DRINKS

August 8, 2018 (San Diego) -  A trendy snack called Dragon’s Breath is sending some consumers including teenagers to the hospital with serious burns and internal injuries, the Washington Post and other media outlets report. The snack is made from colorful cereal balls similar to Fruit Loops or other snack items drenched with liquid nitrogen, which freezes to around minus 320 degrees Fahrenheit. The Dragon’s Breath user then blows out condensed moisture that looks like smoke.

The “King of Fruits” is rightfully given that name. Fresh mangos sliced and chilled in the refrigerator are like a sugar rush when eating them – at least it’s not a refined sugar, but a natural sugar from the mango.

July 24, 2018 (La Mesa) -- This past Tuesday, the La Mesa Village had quite a buzz emanating from Fourpenny House Pub.   People came to try out a new concept – unplugged dining.  As there are no TV’s, this cozy Scottish Brew Pub already has less emphasis on screens than many restaurants.  Taking it a step further on Tuesday, Fourpenny offered table games and displayed signs encouraging people to take a tech break while enjoying their meal.
