January 6, 2012 (La Mesa) – In a brazen robbery, a thief struggled with a female customer seated at a table outside a Starbucks at 5020 Baltimore Drive, stealing her laptop and purse at 5:45 p.m. yesterday.
The suspect, a Hispanic man in his mid-20s wearing a red plaid shirt and jeans, got into the passenger side of a waiting white 4-door vehicle driven by a second male.The two suspects sped away southbound on Baltimore Drive.
January 6, 2012 (Alpine) -- In December, the “Alpine Squares” square dance club held their 27th annual Christmas Sock Hop for the benefit of Rady Children’s Hospital. Over $3700 was raised at this event, to be used for recreational therapy for the severely medically challenged children being treated there. The dance was co-sponsored again by Toyota of Santee, and held at their showroom.

January 6, 2012 (San Diego)--100 years after a Free Speech movement was born in San Diego to protect citizens’ right to protest, the movement has come full circle…..
Few San Diegans today are aware of numerous free speech fights across America a century ago—or that “dwarfing them all was the San Diego episode,” according to the San Diego Journal of History’s fascinating account at http://www.sandiegohistory.org/journal/73winter/speech.htm. Fearing mob violence from the Industrial Workers of the World amid a growing U.S. labor movement and actions by anarchists, City leaders in 1912 outlawed public speaking in a five-square block area of then-downtown centered at Fifth and E streets. Thousands of defiant people turned out in protest of the ban and numerous arrests ensued, clogging jails and courts. Fire hoses, horsewhips and clubs were used by police; vigilantes joined police, even kidnapping a newspaper publisher as riots and deaths ensued in a conflict that lasted six months.
To this day, however, San Diego has never restored the people’s free speech rights.
Today, Occupy San Diego members came to City Hall to present a ballot proposal that would amend the encroachment code.

The band is a free (no tuition or fees) program for musicians ages 11 to 18 with at least one year of experience.
January 5, 2011 (Julian)--The San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation will be conducting weekday pile burns in January through May, weather permitting, at Santa Ysabel East Preserve, Volcan Mountain Preserve and William Heise County Park.
The pile burns — in which piles of cleared brush and other cut vegetation are burned — will reduce the fire hazard of excess vegetation fuels.

January 4, 2012 (El Cajon) – A homeowner escaped her burning mobile home this morning, but her chihuahua dog, Mojo, was found unconscious and near death. Thanks to dedicated efforts by local firefighters, however, Mojo's live has been saved.

January 4, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – A man suspected of burglarizing senior citizens in Santee, Chula Vista, and Rancho Bernardo was arrested this morning. Joshua David Nicholes, 20, was taken into custody by detectives from the Santee Sheriff’s Station and Riverside Sheriff’s deputies after a warrant search on Margarita Road in Temecula.
January 4, 2012 (San Diego County) -- Effective January 1, 2012, California Fire Safe Council (CFSC) will become the state liaison for the Firewise Communities/USA program in California. This new designation is part of an agreement between Firewise USA, CFSC and CAL FIRE that delegates CAL FIRE's authority as State Firewise liaison to the California Fire Safe Council. The agreement is memorialized in a Memorandum of Understanding between CFSC and CAL FIRE.

January 4, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won the Iowa Caucus in the Republican Presidential race by a slim eight-vote margin last night, taking 24.6% of the vote.
January 2, 2011 (San Diego's East County) – On the eve of Tuesday's Iowa Caucus, polls show the race could be close—with a number of candidates striving to win the Republican Presidential Primary election or prove viability with a strong showing.
All Republican contenders are conservatives who believe in smaller government, lower taxes, less regulation of businesses and corporations, rolling back environmental regulations, and outlawing or restricting abortions.Each has spoken out against President Obama’s healthcare reforms and all but one has indicated support for either privatizing or eliminating Social Security. January 2, 2012 (Ramona) – The Ramona Grasslands and Wildlife Research Institute (WRI) invites the public to visit and view wintering and resident birds of prey. Programs begin promptly at 9 a.m. and end at noon every Saturday in January.
