Acting on a report from the San Diego Sheriff of eight people lost in a winter snowstorm near Sunrise Highway in the Pine Valley Area, the CBP activated its Border Search Trauma and Rescue Team.
February 27, 2011 (San Diego’s East County)—Santana and West Hills went head to head on February 23rd to determine the 1st place Varsity team to represent the 2010-2011 Grossmont League in the county finals this Spring.
Ruth Weiss moderated the match and over 150 people crowded into the Grossmont High School library, where the standing-room-only crowd watched two brilliant teams of scholars move back and forth with the lead.
February 28, 2011 (Lemon Grove) -- Rosemary Putnam, Lemon Grove outstanding humanitarian and volunteer, was recently presented the Paul Harris Award by the Rotary Club of Lemon Grove for her community service as Lemon Grove's Peacemaker of the Year. February 27, 2011 (San Diego)--S. Myron “Mike” Klarfeld, 83, died February 23 in the arms of his wife, Councilmember Marti Emerald, after a long struggle with Alhzeimer’s disease. An attorney for 54 years, first in Massachusetts and later California, he is remembered as a champion of justice.
His longtime colleague in the law, famed attorney F. Lee Bailey, once wrote that Mike Klarfeld was a “barrister extraordinaire, who is damned near as nuts as I am.”
February27, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – The weekend storm has passed, leaving 26 inches of snow on Laguna Mountain and 16 inches on Mount Palomar. Alpine, Pine Valley, Campo and other communities received ample snow to require snow plows to clear roads.

Note: Chains are required this morning on both Palomar and Laguna Mountains, and Sunrise Highway is closed at the north end. There is ample snow at lower elevations however for snow play, such as in the Cuyamaca area.

February 27, 2011 (Santee) - Bedlam erupted in the West Hills High School gym Friday night (2/25) after Emily Cole scored the game-winning layup as time expired to lead the Wolfpack to a 37-36 win over the visiting Conquistadors of San Diego Serra High School.
"It was one and one and [Serra player Tia Griffis] missed the shot, so Haley got the rebound, she threw it to me, I just sprinted as fast as I could and went in for the layup," said Cole about receiving the pass from teammate Haley Forsberg.

Funds to cover diagnostic tests and medical supplies for patients without insurance
The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) board of directors has voted to approve a $150,000 grant to Volunteers in Medicine – San Diego, Inc. (VIM), a non-profit that brings together medical professionals and patients who don’t have health insurance.
The money will pay for diagnostic lab fees and medical supplies, as well as X-ray and ultrasound tests, for uninsured East County residents who are treated for free at the VIM El Cajon medical clinic at 1457 East Madison Ave.

February 25, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – A cold storm will bring heavy snowfall late tonight through Saturday evening.
Snow is forecast to drop to unusually low elevations of 2,000 feet in East County’s mountains and upper deserts. Interstate 8 east of Alpine, Cuyamaca, Boulevard, Descanso Ranchita, and Pine Valley are among the areas where snow is predicted, as well as Palomar and Laguna mountains, where more than a foot of snow fell last weekend.
February 25, 2011 (Crest) – The Sheriff’s office has been going door-to-door to notify residents in Crest about a prowler who has been peeking in windows of homes in the vicinity of Crest Drive and Highline Trail. Paula Dickenson, crime prevention specialist at the Sheriff’s substation in Alpine, said two incidents occurred involving a Hispanic man, 20-25 years old, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing a red hooded sweat shirt.

February 24, 2011 (El Cajon) –Should El Cajon renew its Community Development Corporation (CDC) and Planned Business Improvement District (PBID)? Downtown merchants will be asked that question starting in mid-March, when a petition for renewal will be circulated to bring the issue up for a vote.
But a Blue Ribbon Commission chaired by developer Daryl Priest issued a report January 31st calling for the CDC/PBID to be suspected because of “ineffective management” by the CDC. The CDC in turn has issued a point-by-point rebuttal while mobilizing community support.
