August 12, 2010 (Lemon Grove) -- Seeking relief for school districts already scrambling to cope with unexpected cash shortages and budget revisions, Assemblymember Marty Block (D-Lemon Grove) announced that AB 184 has cleared the Senate Education Committee. This legislation provides statutory authority to allow school districts to recover critical special education funding that they received during the last fiscal year to meet the needs of students in their classroom.
August 12, 2010 (San Diego) San Diego Police Department reports that Jewele Hiday, 12, missing since Sunday morning, has been found safe in the South Bay area. She reportedly ran away to a friend's after an argument with her mother.
August 11, 2010 (Jamul) – San Miguel Fire and Sycuan firefighting crews responded to a structure fire off Highway 94 and Vista San Diego in Jamul this afternoon. Upon arrival, crews found the roof in flames and made an aggressive attack.

August 11, 2010 (San Diego) -- San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit detectives arrested 35 year-old Quang Van Dang at 6 a.m. this morning for the murder of a woman in the Oak Park area, just west of Lemon Grove. Quang was located by Homicide Unit investigators in the 5400 block of Fieger Street, a short distance from the crime scene.
August 10, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) --San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Lemon Grove Substation are asking for the public’s assistance to locate a suspect wanted for burglary. On August 5, 2010 , a felony arrest warrant was issued for G. R. Arkwright for burglary. He has been linked to several burglaries in the Rancho San Diego and Spring Valley areas of the County.
August 10, 2010 (Poway) –San Diego Sheriff seeks public help to locate a man who reportedly grabbed the arm of a 17-year-old walking her dogs in Poway last night and attempted to pull her behind a laundry building adjacent to a dog park.
August 10, 2010 (San Diego) -- Sheriff Bill Gore announces the promotion of Commander Ed Prendergast to Assistant Sheriff, Law Enforcement Services. Assistant Sheriff Prendergast is currently assigned oversight for the Alpine, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, and Santee Stations, as well as Rural Law Enforcement and Crime Analysis.He is a 29-year veteran with the Sheriff's Department who has served with distinction in every assignment throughout the organization, said Gore.

August 8, 2010 (San Diego)—Don’t go into Agora, which was released to theaters on July 30, expecting something along the lines of 300. It is more intellectual and philosophical than that. I like to think of it as a smart person’s epic. There is bloodshed but not as soaked and certainly not as fake. There is love and lust but there is no sex. Alejandro Amenabar has shied away from the obligatory scenes associated with these movies and replaced them with scenes that contain intelligence, relying on the solid writing and great performances.
As a San Diego native, I was quite surprised to discover that my hometown had just last year surpassed Los Angeles to become the nation’s number one refugee resettlement location.

Kids often trespass on his isolated property deep in the woods to see if the old man is there, only to be chased away with a shotgun.

August 7, 2010 (San Diego)--The Other Guys works best when it focuses on Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. I found their scenes droll because of the way the two played off each other. The Other Guys could have benefitted tremendously from a slight trim job and a comprehensible, less-than-convoluted plot but it in the end, it really doesn’t matter. The movie has enough laughs for me to recommend it, although it is not without its flaws.
August 7, 2010 (San Diego) – A 27-year-old motorcyclist riding northbound in the 5100 block of College Avenue yesterday struck the media at 1:54 this morning. He sustained serious head trauma and is in critical condition at Mercy Hospital, San Diego Police report.
August 6, 2010 (El Cajon) – Emergency room physicians described the condition of Jeremy Marlow, 28, as the worst case of neglect that they had ever seen. Paramedics brought Marlow, who lived on Graves Avenue in El Cajon, to Grossmont Hospital on January 21. He was unconscious, suffering from infections, covered in open pressure wounds, and weighed less than 100 pounds, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. He died five days later of pneumonia.
Last night his mother, Deborah Marlow, 58, and his brother, Christopher Marlow, 26, were arrested. Both are charged with elder abuse, a crime that can be filed against caregivers for abusing a person of any age.

Donations sought for memorial fund to benefit new high school
August 6, 2010 (Alpine)-- Barbara Lowe, resident of Alpine, passed away on July 31, 2010 due to complications from liver cancer and Crohn’s Disease. She was the secretary for the Alpine High School Citizen’s Committee and an executive committee member for the past three years.
“Her commitment to seeing this local Alpine High School built, largely for her Alpine resident grandchildren to attend, had become just one of her many reasons she fought her disease with desire and dignity,” said Bill Weaver, chair of the Committee. “She loved her family and friends dearly.”

August 5, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – In the 2009-2010 school year, California approved more than 88 new charter schools at a cost of tens of millions of dollars. Recent charters approved include middle schools opening in districts that already have schools with high academic achievements--new charters with oversight provided by a district with middle school test scores that rank in the bottom 10% statewide.
These findings, discovered by East County Magazine, raise serious questions about budget priorities at a time when the state faces a $20 billion deficit. What are the long-range consequences of approving numerous charters, all entitled to a portion of public education funds?
