March 17, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) – This week, we sat down for an interview with Chuck Brown and Roy Anthony, the founder and conductor of the San Diego Concert Band. This talented musical group has its roots in La Mesa and will be performing its 26th annual Springtime Classics concert on April 17th at 7 p.m.  Kroc Center.  The event will feature a wide range of music, from Sousa marches to classical works of Verdi, Wagner, and a world premier piece performed by the San Diego Clarinet Quartet.

Brown and Anthony share details on the concert and the band’s efforts to win a national John Philip Sousa award. HOT KROC NIGHTS: STAY COOL WITH ICE SKATING AND DIVE-IN MOVIES

July 7, 2014 (San Diego) – Families are invited to beat the heat on Wednesday evenings this summer  by enjoying dive-in movies (float in the pool with inner tubes provided) and $5 ice skating.

INTERNATIONAL SKATING CHAMPION HEADLINES KROC ICE HOLIDAY SHOW

December 19, 2013 (San Diego) -- Christopher Caluza, Philippine national champion, performed as the grand finale at last night's holiday ice show at the Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center Ice Arena.  The show also included performances by skating school students, from tots to senior citizens.

Caluza got his start training at local ice rinks before gaining international acclaim.  I recall seeing him landing splits on the ice when he was a young kid; we all knew he was destined to be a star!  Click here to view the video of his performance: http://youtu.be/7gHnrQA21Gw

YOUTH CHOIR OF SAN DIEGO PRESENTS DEBUT CONCERT MAY 11 AT KROC CENTER

May 9, 2013 (San Diego) --The Youth Choir of San Diego is a new community youth choir sponsored by the Kroc Center in partnership with Helix, Crawford and Lincoln High Schools.  The mission is to bring community to San Diego by developing young leaders through contemporary choral music.

The public is invited to enjoy a night of music featuring songs from every era--from the Beatles to Bruno Mars—while supporting local teens in this new venture.

KROC CENTER PRESENTS “BOO BASH!” OCTOBER 27

October 21, 2012 (San Diego) – The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s annual Boo Bash! on October 27 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. at 6845 University Avenue, San Diego.  Everyone is welcome to celebrate a safe, family-friendly Halloween at the Center.  Festivities will include cookie decorating, fang-tastic pumpkin decorating, spooky carnival games, snacks, frightful bounce houses, trick-or-treating, rock climbing and more.

December 11, 2011 (Rolando) The community is invited to celebrate the annual Jingle Bell Kroc Community Christmas Festival at The Salvation Army Kroc Center, 6845 University Avenue (at 68th St) in San Diego, on Wednesday, December 14, from 4-8 p.m. Admission is free with donation of a new, unwrapped toy in original packaging, valued at $5 or more.

 
 
Toys will benefit the ABC 10 Toy Drive to help less fortunate children experience the joy of Christmas--children who might otherwise be overlooked this year--through The Salvation Army.

SAMBA MUSIC & MORE FEB 23 AT KROC CENTER'S FREE FAMILY ARTS & LITERACY NIGHT

 

February 24, 2011 (San Diego) -- Young Audiences of San Diego and The Salvation Army Kroc Center invite the public to a free Family Arts and Literacy Night Thursday, February 24th at 6:30 pm. Hundreds of families will gather in the Kroc Center Multipurpose Room-Education Building for an evening of fun for the “Carnaval Around the World” event and each child will take home a brand new book.

 

For this family-friendly Carnaval event, Afro-Cuban/Afro-Brazilian dance group Sol e Mar will perform. There will also be Capoeira and Samba workshops with musician and dancer Claudia Lyra.

Instead of riding in a sleigh drawn by reindeer, Santa will utilize pedal power as he leads over150 bicyclists in the San Diego Bicycle Club’s 23rd annual “Light up a Life” holiday toy drive on December 11th.

The beloved holiday production retains its emotional power and pure joy thanks to the marvelously-told story by Ockrent and Ahrens and the powerful Menken/Ahrens score filled with beautiful melodies and emotional lyrics. Sixty youths ages 7-19 will perform.

The national event provides opportunities for Neighborhood Watch participants, communities, and law enforcement agencies to celebrate effective crime prevention practices and partnerships. San Diego Sheriff's Department supports Neighborhood Watch, Crime-Free Multi-Housing, Start Smart, and other programs targeting crime and safety, and has crime prevention specialists at all patrol stations dedicated to community education and support.

Over 1,500 local children are expected to enjoy visits and photos with the Easter bunny, as well as pony rides, bounce houses, arts and crafts, a rock climbing wall, games and prizes.

In response, the Salvation Army Kroc Center has joined forces with PlayItSafe Defesne to empower women and teens (ages 13 and older) with a FREE preventative awareness training and demonstration of pratical self defense techniques.

The Salvation Army Kroc Center is opening its doors to the community for FREE on Saturday, January 9. Guests can take guided tours, and enjoy special membership savings as well as a free all-venue pass for the day.  Visitors can also experience skateboarding, ice skating, rock climbing, swimming, fitness classes, weight lifting, arts and crafts, an acting workshop and more.

The Salvation Army Kroc Center offers a “hauntless jaunt” with family-oriented activities on Saturday, October 31, starting at 5 p.m. Kroc Center is located at 6845 University Avenue in San Diego (two blocks west of 70th Street in La Mesa). Activities include trick-or-treating, pumpkin decorating, cookie decorating, face painting, carnival games, snacks, and a live performance by The School of Rock Band.

YES, THERE IS A FREE LUNCH—FOR KIDS AT KROC CENTER THIS SUMMER

 

July 15, 2009 (San Diego)—Children under 18 can receive free sack lunches and milk at the Salvation Army Kroc Center from June 29th through July 31st (except July 3rd). Children under age 11 must be accompanied by an adult to receive the lunches, which are available Monday through Friday from 11 to 11:45 a.m. No paperwork or ID is required, and no questions will be asked.

Hot Kroc Nights offer family specials for ice skating or swimming every Wednesday night through August 26.
