SAFETY ALERT: VIRTUAL KIDNAPPERS TARGETING SAN DIEGO FAMILIES

Source: San Diego Community College District

October 27, 2016 (San Diego) – The San Diego Community College District has issued the following alert:  As many of you may already know, families across San Diego are receiving phone calls from “virtual kidnappers” claiming a loved one or family member has been kidnapped.  These criminals then demand a ransom amount (usually a few thousand dollars) that can be dropped off at a remote location (often in Tijuana) in exchange for the safe release and return of the “kidnapped” family member. The criminals’ phone numbers are often untraceable.

Please do not meet their demands!  This is a phone scam that local law enforcement and the FBI are investigating.

What to do when you or your family member receives a similar phone call:

ESCAPE REALITY AND GO INTO THE WOODS WITH GROSSMONT HIGH: SHOW CONTIUNES OCTOBER 28-29 AT 7 P.M.

October 27, 2016 (La Mesa) - Please support your local high schools. These are the entertainers of the future. High school arts are the building blocks. There is nothing like a full audience to inspire confidence and help them give their best performances.

Into the Woods is a difficult play, especially the lyrical rhythmic songs. Although a play with a large cast is good for high school, I loved watching the cast of 19 come together and give their all to take  us on a journey of life messages. Four fairy tales (Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel) blend together to show us how the paths we take through life and the choices we make influence everything we do, and how we may have to return to the same place to learn the right lesson.

HEAR OUR INTERVIEW: MARK JACKSON, NO ON MEASURE B

October 25,  2016 (San Diego's  East  County)--  Measure B on the  countywide ballot was paid for by  a  developer.  Accretive Development wants voters to approve Lilac  Hills, a massive,  master-planned community the size of Del Mar in rural Valley Center.

Why should voters in East County and elsewhere in San Diego care?  First, because taxpayers countywide could wind up footing part of the bill and second,  because if Measure B passes, developers of other controversial  projects could similarly seek to bypass state enviornmental review and the county plannning process.  That's why major environmental groups such as  Sierra Club, Save Our Forests and Ranchlands, and Cleveland Natoinal Forest Foundation are all opposed to the ballot proposition.

Hear our interview with Mark Jackson from the No on Measure B committee, originally aired on  our show on KNSJ radio, by clicking the audio link.

GROSSMONT HIGH FOOTBALL PLAYER HURT BY LIGHTNING: WHY WASN’T PRACTICE CANCELLED DURING THUNDERSTORM?

By Miriam Raftery

Photo courtesy ECM news partner 10 News

October 25, 2016 (El Cajon)—A 14-year-old football player at Grossmont High School was injured  by lightning that struck nearby while walking toward the locker room after football practice yesterday around 6:15 p.m.

In 2010,  we reported on a coach at El Capitan High School who kept players on a field during a lightning storm in violation of district policy. “The policy of the GUHSD in thunder/lightning storm conditions would be to immediately seek safe shelter at the first sound of thunder and to remain in said shelter until at least ½ hour after the last sound of thunder,” Larry Pear, director of extended and co-curricular activities at the Grossmont Union High School District,  told us at the time.

Numerous witnesses report seeing lighting strikes throughout the afternoon in the community, right up until the time the student was struck. So why wasn’t yesterday’s football practice at Grossmont High, in the same school district, cancelled?
