Aztecs yield goal 68 seconds into game

August 12, 2017 (Fullerton) - San Diego State endured a 49-minute delay before the start of the game and surrendered a goal in the first 68 seconds in a 1-0 exhibition loss at Cal State Fullerton. Outside of the lone goal, the Aztecs showed promise, outshooting the Titans 12-4 for the contest.

After the aforementioned tardy start, the Titans earned a corner kick and Samantha Koemans found the back of the net to give the home side an early 1-0 lead. From there, the Aztecs settled down and controlled the game. At the halftime horn, SDSU finished with six shots, putting three on net, while Cal State Fullerton attempted its one successful shot.

The second half featured more of the same from both sides as SDSU continued to put pressure on the Titan defense, adding another six shots in the final 45 minutes compared to Cal State Fullerton’s three. Ultimately, neither team would tickle the twine as the game’s score remained unchanged at the end of 90 minutes.

Outside of its 12-4 advantage in shots, San Diego State led the Titans in shots on goal, 4-2, and the teams were equal in corner kicks (6-6).

Individually, Aliyah Utush had a game-high three shots and was one of four Aztecs to have one shot on goal. Angela Mitchell, Stacie Moran and Mia Root each added two shots with one coming on target. Eden Kawabe was responsible for the Aztecs’ fourth shot on goal.

As for the goalkeepers, Gabby English received the starting nod and played 62 minutes and 40 seconds before giving way to Kate Hart, who made one save.

San Diego State travels to Los Angeles, where a match is scheduled for Friday at No. 9 UCLA. First tap is slated for 7 p.m. PT and the game will air on the PAC-12 Networks.
