ATTENTION LOCAL LOVEBIRDS: GROSSMONT COLLEGE SEEKS COUPLES WHO MET SPOUSES ON CAMPUS

February 12, 2011 (El Cajon)--Grossmont College seeks former students, faculty and staff members who met their spouses at the campus. Couples who respond to college officials will be invited to a free pre-Valentine’s Day reception next year on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012 at the El Cajon community college.

 

The event will be one of several that the college is planning as part of its year-long 50-year anniversary celebration from June 2011 to June 2012. The reception will feature live music--including love songs from the past five decades.

IMPROV PERFORMANCE OPENS FEB. 4 AT GROSSMONT STAGEHOUSE THEATRE

 

January 26, 2011 (El Cajon)--The Grossmont College Theatre Arts Department will present “Inside the Actor’s Process: Improvisation,” a performance of student actors using improvisational skills, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4 and 5, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5.

 

Through presentations of scenes and monologues, the show will demonstrate how student actors can develop such improvisational skills as timing, team work and listening.

RAIN PATTERNS ON DISPLAY IN ART EXHIBITION AT HYDE ART GALLERY JAN. 24-FEB. 24

 

January 24, 2011 (El Cajon)--The Grossmont College Hyde Art Gallery, located on Grossmont College’s campus in El Cajon, is presenting an exhibit of 24 wall panels featuring natural materials that display rain patterns that fell on campus during the 2009-2010 rainy season. The exhibit, called “Rain Events and Related Investigations", was created by Grossmont College art faculty member Jim Wilsterman. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, runs from January 24-February 24.

January 2, 2010 (El Cajon)-- Cypress College defeated Mt. San Jacinto College to win the Grossmont College 23rd Annual Holiday Tournament for women's basketball held on the Grossmont campus in El Cajon December 28 - 30. The Grossmont Griffins finished in fourth place.

October 16, 2010 (San Diego's East County) -- The Grossmont College Foundation, a fund-raising organization that supports Grossmont College students and educational programs, will host its 2010 Dinner Gala and Auction fund-raiser starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino. The public is invited to attend.

 

Festivities for this year’s ninth annual Gala will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception and silent auction, followed by dinner starting at 7:30 p.m., live auction and live entertainment. The 2010 theme is “Griffin Gold Rush: 49 Years of Excellence.”

GROSSMONT COLLEGE STUDENT NEWSPAPER HAS NEW INSTRUCTOR

 

 

August 25, 2010 (El Cajon) --Donald H. Harrison, creator of San Diego Jewish World, an online newspaper, has been selected as the new instructor for the class that produces the Grossmont College student newspaper, The Summit.  In addition to a print version of the student newspaper, Harrison says he is planning for a web-based “Griffin News Service” to feature a calendar of on-campus events, stories written by students, as well as audio and video features.

Longtime instructor and musician will oversee arts, languages and communication department; aims to build performing arts center for campus

July 27, 2010 (El Cajon) – Steve Baker has been named dean of the department of arts, languages and communication at Grossmont College. Baker began his career with the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District as a music instructor in 1985, and has taught at both Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges. At Grossmont, he was music department chair and interim dean before his latest appointment.

 

Baker has been a professional musician for over 40 years. In his career as a pianist, he has performed with numerous national and international recording artists. The Steve Baker Trio specializes in Brazilian and Afro-Cuban-influenced jazz and performs in varied venues.

June 21, 2010 (El Cajon) – Higher education funding cuts due to the California state budget crisis have forced Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District to severely reduce summer course sections, despite growing demands for classes from students seeking to retrain for new careers and complete general education requirements to transfer to four-year universities and colleges.

 

Despite efforts to keep budget cuts from harming students, the colleges have been forced to slash summer offerings by 50%.

GROSSMONT COLLEGE GRAD NICOLE STOCKING RECEIVES DIPLOMA AND BIRTH CERTIFICATE--ALL ON THE SAME DAY

June 7, 2010 (El Cajon)--At 39 weeks along in her pregnancy, Nicole waited in line to walk at Grossmont College’s 49th annual commencement on June 3, when her water broke signaling the delivery of her fourth child. The 28-year-old didn’t want to leave the college and go to the hospital, while 4,000 people waited to celebrate the 1,398 students in the Class of 2010 receiving an associate degree or a certificate of achievement.

May 10, 2010 (El Cajon) -- The Grossmont College Guitar Guild will present a performance by Grossmont College Music Dept. classical guitar instructor Robert Wetzel starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 15, at Room 221 on campus. The public is invited to attend.

 

The performance is a fund-raiser for the Grossmont College Guitar Guild. Admission is $8 per person, and $5 for seniors, students and children under age 12.
