October 9, 2010 (San Diego) -- Two former Chicago residents with ties to a sophisticated drug operation who had been on the run from law enforcement for nearly a decade with their four young children were located and arrested last week in Tijuana. “A tip from a viewer of the “America’s Most Wanted” program led to the arrest of these two fugitives,” said special agent Darrell Foxworth with the FBI in San Diego.
October 9, 2010 (Washington, DC) – Just over a week after the President signed the Small Business Jobs and Credit Act, HR 5297, close to 2,000 small businesses have been approved for SBA-backed loans. Nearly $1 billion total will soon go to these small businesses. Locally, at least three business owners have already been approved since the new law went into effect.

October 9, 2010 (Alpine) - The ACLU has filed a lawsuit to protect Chris Neucomb's right to run for Alpine School Board. He was appointed to fill a vacancy and is running for re-election. A retired naval officer, now a federal employee, he is barred by the Hatch Act from partisan political activities. California school board elections are nonpartisan, and Neucomb is campaigning in a nonpartisan manner. Yet the U.S. Office of Special Counsel has warned it may find him in violation and declared that “a nonpartisan election could become partisan” if any candidate in the race seeks or advertises a political party's endorsement.
If found in violation, Neucomb could be forced to withdraw from the race, resign his federal position, or face enforcement action. He is asking a federal court to protect his First Amendment right, and asked that we publish his open letter to voters.

In Carlsbad, a 5,000-gallon sewage spill from the sewage treatment plant is flooding city streets in the area of Avenida Encinas and Palomar Airport Road. North County residents are asked to reduce water usage, 10 News reports.
The second incident is a large diameter natural gas line break at Towns Gate Drive in Carmel Country Ranch. Evacuations of a complex are underway. A Haz-Mat crew and SDG&E have been dispatched.

October 7, 2010 (La Mesa) – A fire at 4651 Pomona Avenue in La Mesa caused an estimated $75,000 in damage to a garage and its contents. Heartland Fire & Rescue arrived on the scene at 12:10 p.m., three minutes after receiving a call, to find fire engulfing a detached garage behind a home. As fire crews stretched hose lines to attack the fire, flames began spreading to a neighbor’s fence and vegetation.
October 7, 2010 (La Mesa) -- Adult athletes ages 50 and older from East County are teaming up with elementary and middle school students for the fifth annual East County Intergenerational Games in La Mesa. This year’s event is held at La Mesa Middle School, 4200 Parks Ave in La Mesa. Students from grades second through sixth are paired with active adults age 50+ to complete in a circuit of non-competitive fun and simple activities. The event takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.on October 14.
Opening ceremonies will highlight Philip Dunn, a three-time Olympian race walker, four-time U.S. 50 km champion and USA Track and Field Board member.

La Mesa man's long battle to recover Pissarro painting stolen by Nazis ends, but family vows to pursue his dream
October 5, 2010 (La Mesa) – Claude Cassirer, who survived an internment camp during World War II and became a lecturer in schools teaching students about the Holocaust, died on September 25, 2010. A portrait photographer, he later became a volunteer and licensed ombudsman for the State of California for more than 20 years, striving to assure proper healthcare for seniors. He and his wife, Beverly, were also prominent political activists and co-founders of the La Mesa Foothills Democratic Club.
Recently, Cassirer made headlines by winning a court battle in September that allowed him to sue the government of Spain. His lawsuit sought to recover a Pissarro painting stolen from his grandparents by the Nazis, but he passed away before he could see his long-time dream fulfilled.
