September 19, 2010 (El Cajon) – A woman was robbed in the east parking structure at Parkway Plaza shopping mall on Thursday, September 16 at 11:47 a.m. by a man who also tried to carjack her vehicle. El Cajon police have released a security photo of the suspect, an African-American man, 18-25 with a muscular build and a tattoo on his neck.

BRUSH FIRE DOUSED NEAR LAKE MURRAY

 

September 20, 2010 (La Mesa) – Firefighters from La Mesa and San Diego Fire departments swiftly halted a brush fire that began at Connecticut Avenue and Delaware Avenue in La Mesa this afternoon, spreading onto a hillside at Del Cerro Boulevard and Elaine Way. The two-acre fire was extinguished with no homes damaged and no injuries.

"AGGRESSIVE DOG” SHOT IN LAKESIDE, BY SHERIFF DEPUTY

 

September 20, 2010 (Lakeside) – A San Diego Sheriff’’s deputy shot a 100-pound dog that reportedly charged at him, growling with teeth bared. The shooting occurred on a driveway of a residence across the street from Lakeview Elementary School at 7:40 a.m., about an hour before classes began.

FIRE NEAR U.S.-MEXICO BORDER

 

Update 12 p.m. - This fire continues to spread and is moving toward the border, Cal-Fire's Nick Schuler said. There are currently 10 engines, 2 dozers, and 2 hand crews at the scene.  Helicopters are on the ground staging to combat the fire if it reaches the U.S.  In addition, air tankers are staging in Ramona if needed.  The fire is now 35+ acres.

September 19, 2010 (Boulevard) 11:25 a.m. – A brush fire is burning within 1,000 feet of the U.S.-Mexico border, just south of the community of Boulevard in East County. “Currently the fire is seven to 10 acres, rapid rate of spread moving in an easterly direction,” said Cal-Fire battalion chief Nick Schuler.

JAMACHA FIRE DOUSED; HUNDREDS EVACUATED EARLIER

September 18, 2010 (Spring Valley) 8 p.m. – A team of approximately 90 firefighters saved dozens of homes that were threatened by a fast-moving brush fire burning in flashy fuels in Spring Valley this afternoon. One home suffered an estimated $60,000 in damage after an ember blew onto a tinder-dry wood shake roof.

 

About 150 people were evacuated from the Lamplighter Village mobilehome park and additional evacuations were ordered for residents of the Carriage Hills neighborhood, where flames burned to within 30 yards of some homes.

DEPUTY SHOOTS MAN WHO THREATENED TO ABDUCT CHILD IN SANTEE

 

September 18, 2010 (Santee) – A San Diego Sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded Pedro Galarza, 26, a documented gang member on parole. Deputies responded to a call shortly after 8 p.m. last night from his mother, who said her son was armed with a knife and was attempting to abduct a child.

Update 3:25 p.m.  Aircraft have been released and firefighters remain on hand mopping up hotspots at the scene of the fire, which is now contained.

September 18, 2010 (Spring Valley) 2:10 p.m. - The Jamacha Fire is now 50 acres and forward spread is halted, Chief August Ghio of San Miguel Fire confirms.  The fire is under joing command of Cal-Fire, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and San Miguel Fire.

 

Anxious residents poured into the streets to watch the fire at the Lamplighter Village mobile home park, where flames encroached just behind the complex. Smoke is visible from throughout East County and an evacuation center has been set up at Skyline Church.

September 18, 2010 (Spring Valley)  12:42 p.m. -- Homes on Via de la Terra are being evacuated due to a brush fire.  Heavy winds are blowing flames eastward, ECM has learned.  The fire is within 100 feet of structures in the area of Jamacha Blvd. and Lamplighter Village.  Watch for updates soon.

September 17, 2010 (Alpine)-- Times have changed through the years in this mountain town--and more changes are coming. "The Alpine Historical Society is looking for someone who would like to take pictures of Alpine as we change," a press release states. September 17, 2010 (La Mesa) - Former Helix High School football standout Reggie Bush has decided to forfeit the Heisman Trophy that he won in 2005 while playing for the University of Southern California. Bush's decision comes before the Heisman Trophy Trust, the award's governing body, was expected to vote to strip Bush of his award. It marks the first time in the trophy's 75 year history that it has been forfeited. 

 

ON THE SILVER SCREEN: CLICHES, UNORIGINALITY HOLD UP ROMANCE IN "THE TOWN"

September 17, 2010 (San Diego)--The Town opens with Ben Affleck and his crew robbing a bank. The action here is standard but one shot stands out. Rebecca Hall, playing a Bank Manager, is forced to open the safe. She shakes as she tries several times to get the correct combination. She’s under pressure because the cops are on their way and because she has a gun to her head. She finally manages to get it open. This looked promising; Affleck, who also directed and co-wrote, shows a knack for directing suspense despite the otherwise ordinary robbery.

 

ON THE SILVER SCREEN: TOO MUCH PLOT OVERCOOKS "SOUL KITCHEN"

September 17, 2010 (San Diego)--A lot happens in Soul Kitchen. Too much, actually. Just as a film can rarely survive on the flimsiest of plots, a movie can have just as much a hard time sustaining itself trying to balance a smorgasbord of story lines. This newest film by German director Fatih Akin suffers from a major case of plot overload. In my notes I made a list and counted six distinct story threads. For this movie that was too many.

 

Should the Sheriff provide more timely info to the public about reported stalkings, attempted kidnappings, or stranger assaults?
