January 23, 2019 (Salton Sea) -- Thousands of water birds died of an avian cholera outbreak at the south end of the Salton Sea between Jan. 8-17.
“Outbreaks like this one occur annually as a result of birds flocking closely together during migration,” says California Fish and Wildlife spokesman Jordan Traverso.

Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s detectives and crime suppression team members assisted County Code Compliance in serving an abatement warrant. According to Sergeant Matt Cook II, “the abatement warrant was the direct result of numerous complaints from concerned citizens” as well as violating of the county’s zoning ordinance.

The underground sex economy locally is worth an estimated $810 million a year. To combat this crisis and help protect vulnerable young people, District Attorney Summer Stephan has announced three new programs to bring human trafficking education, prevention and awareness training to kids and teens in all public schools countywide.
January 22, 2019 (San Diego) — Kumeyaay women were among the groups participating in the 2019 San Diego Women’s March and program at Waterfront Park.

January 22, 2019 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women's soccer program is set to conduct an ID camp Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3, on the SDSU campus.
The ID camp, which will be led by head coach Mike Friesen and assistant coach Chassion Griggs, is designed for players to get maximum exposure in front of the Aztec coaching staff and allows attendees an opportunity to receive valuable instruction on the fundamental and advanced skills of soccer, an introduction to the tactical elements of the game, as well as exposing campers to the mental aspect of soccer.

Gavin Newsom to propose spending an extra $7.5 million to confront the issue next fiscal year.

January 20, 2019 (Washington D.C.) – President Donald Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have ratcheted up the battle over the government shutdown.
Last week, Pelosi sent a letter to the President asking him to delay his State of the Union speech to Congress or submit it in writing. "Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29," Pelosi wrote.

January 18, 2019 (El Cajon) - El Cajon Valley and Steele Canyon girls basketball met on Braves wood for a Friday night contest between two evenly-matched teams. The Lady Braves are faring astonishingly well at 12-5 overall coming into tonight. The Cougars are hanging in there at 7-8. Both were .500 in league (2-2) coming into tonight.
January 18, 2019 (Lakeside) – Kathryn Anne Kennedy, 70, was found in Ocotillo Wells shortly after 11 a.m. this morning, Lt. David Perkins with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department has confirmed to ECM.
“A concerned citizen saw her sitting on the steps of the market at a campground in Ocotillo Wells and called for a welfare check because she seemed disoriented,” Lt. Perkins told ECM. Law enforcement officers identified her as the missing woman and transported her back to Lakeside to be reunited with friends, after making sure she did not appear to have any physical injuries.
“She was shaken, hungry and tired,” says Jill Barto, who helped organize a search for the missing woman and received word via a phone call with the good news.

In November 2018, Principal Heather Griffiths and Superintendent Nancy Hauer were invited to travel to China with the goal of partnering with a sister school. They were also asked to participate in the Transnational Educational Summit.

January 17, 2019 (Sacramento) - California Attorney General Xavier Becerra led a bipartisan coalition of 21 states in filing an amicus brief in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals this week to defend the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) in Brakeen v.
