August 10, 2014 (San Diego)-The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that no more genetically engineered crops or pesticides toxic to bees will be used at any National Wildlife Refuges across the country. This brings protection to wildlife n over 150 million acres of federal land, including  refuges here in San Diego County.

HELIX APPROVES WATER RATE INCREASE

 

Fiscal year 2014-15 budget calls for 4.3 percent rate increase—far lower than the anticipated 6.2 percent

August 10, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - Helix Water District’s board of directors Wednesday revised the final budget for fiscal year 2014-15, including a rate increase of 4.3 percent for the average domestic-class customer who uses 25 units of water.  One unit is 748 gallons.  The increase amounts to $5.68 on the average bimonthly bill—well below the anticipated 6.2 percent or $8.23 increase that was approved last year as part of a two-year rate notice in accordance with requirements of Proposition 218.

SWAT display, mini fire truck rides, hot dogs, Sheriff mounted patrol, K-9 and SWAT demonstrations, and lots of camaraderie amongst Police personnel.” This annual event was also free.”

August 11, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - A ribbon cutting ceremonyh will be held for the grand opening of El Capitan High School's new physical education building on Friday, August 29 at 1 p.m.

Project amenities for the new 18,405-square-foot building include boys and girls locker rooms, showers, wrestling/aerobics room, fitness/weight room, team rooms, training room and coaches offices. Site upgrades include: demolition of the older locker room building, replacement of new exterior basketball courts, multiple shade structures for outdoor fitness and a new sand volleyball court. August 10, 2014 (Jamul)--The Jamul Action Committee/Jamulians Against the Casino has filed yet another lawsuit seeking to halt a casino at Jamul Indian Village.  The three-story, $360 million Hollywood Casino Jamul has broken ground and is slated to open in late 2015.

August 10, 2014 (San Diego)--The Cleveland National Forest Foundation (CNFF) has sent a formal request to the California Coastal Commission to postpone project approval for the North Coast Corridor Public Works Plan/Transportation and Resource Enhancement Program (PWP/TREP). This project would expand and widen areas of Interstate 5 between La Jolla and Oceanside.

McFetridge has long contended that transit problems encouraging sprawl anywhere in the county puts added pressure on forests in the inland regions.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING BILLS ADVANCE IN LEGISLATURE

August 12, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)--Two bills aimed at fighting human trafficking are advancing in the Legislature.  Both are authored by San Diego State Senator Marty Block. 

Block says gangs are increasingly involved in human trafficking, selling young girls locallylocal into prostitution and immigrants into forced labor. Human trafficking cases have risen over 600% in San Diego in the past year as gangs rake in over $97 million from human sex trafficking in San Diego alone,  KPBS reports.

SUPERVISORS VOTE TO CREATE BIG AGRICULTURAL PROMOTION PROGRAM

August 8, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) - A “Super moon” and a meteor shower will both light up the sky this Sunday night, according to NASA.  The Super moon is caused by the Earth’s orbit bringing us closer to the moon, and it will be most visible in the early evening, appearing larger and brighter than usual.

August 8, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)—The severity of California’s drought has taken a sharp turn for the worse.  Virtually all of California (99.8%) is now in severe drought or worse, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor's latest report.  Nearly 82% is in extreme drought (including San Diego County) and over half the state (58%) is now in exceptional drought—the worst possible rating. 

“The challenges drought has presented to Cal Fire are huge,” said CAL FIRE Chief Tony Meecham in a public forum last night in Boulevard for residents to meet new fire officials. “We have entire counties in California that are going to run out of water.”

August 8, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – U.S. fighter jets today dropped two 500-pound bombs on terrorists’ artillery that were being used to attack Kurdish forces in Irbil, the capitol of the Kurdish province in Iraq. In addition, U.S. planes dropped humanitarian relief to aid refugees stranded without food or water.

President Barack Obama last night authorized the use of force against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the Al Qaeda splinter group that has renamed itself the Islamic State.  The President also authorized humanitarian aid for victims of ISIS forced to flee their homes or be killed, including persecuted Christians and other religious minorities. The President made clear however that he will not authorize ground troops in the conflict.

Locally the announcement drew praise from Mark Arabo, CEO of the Neighborhood Market Association and a national spokesman for Iraqi Christians.

​"​Our work that began seven weeks ago in Congressman Juan Vargas’ office has resulted in a crescendo of tears, smiles and joy throughout the ​entire Iraqi Christian community​," Arabo said, referring to a Congressional resolution authored by Vargas and drafted by Arabo calling for humanitarian aid. 

HELIX WATER DECLARES DROUGHT LEVEL 2 ALERT: MANDATORY CONSERVATION MEASURES IMPOSED

August 7, 2014 (La Mesa)--Helix Water District’s board of directors voted yesterday to put Drought Level 2 into effect in response to the State Water Resources Control Board’s passage of mandatory water conservation measures to deal with the current drought.

Since February, the district had been in Drought Level 1, which called for numerous voluntary actions to eliminate water waste. Drought Level 2 makes them mandatory.  Residents and businesses are required to take the following conservation steps:
