February 15, 2010 (San Pasqual) -- It was a wild stay for campers at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park over the weekend. On Valentine’s morning, they were awakened by festive trumpeting of the park’s African elephant herd at around 2 a.m. when a calf was born.

February 6, 2010 (San Diego)--San Diego City Councilmember Marti Emerald announces an important step in securing funds for the installation of two traffic lights on College Avenue, one at Arosa Street and one at Adams Avenue. The Crossroads Redevelopment Project Area Committee has voted to recommend funding for the lights. The Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee, chaired by Emerald, is scheduled to hear this item on February 17th.

TOYOTA ORDERS FIX FOR 2.3 MILLION RECALLED VEHICLES

 

February 6, 2010 (San Diego) – Toyota announced it has identified the cause of a sticking accelerator problem believed to have caused the death of CHP officer Mark Saylor and three of his family members in a fiery Santee crash. The manufacturer has ordered recall of 2.3 million Toyotas.

Toyota has dramatically expanded earlier announced recalls of vehicles due to problems associated with a sticking accelerator. The design flaw made national news after a stuck accelerator caused a tragic accident in Santee that killed a law enforcement officer and his family. January 24, 2010 (Poway) – Now you can hit the trail with your best buddy and meet some new companions—both canine and human. The City of Poway announces a free dog-walking group at the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve.

December 26, 2009 (Santee) -- The City of Santee is half way through a one-year trial program allowing dogs off leash in certain city parks. Now there's tail-wagging good news for dogs and their owners:  Santee has increased the hours allowed for dog owners to let their pets exercise in designated areas without being constricted by a leash.

$15 MILLION AVAILABLE FOR FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYERS, COUNTY ANNOUNCES

December 18, 2009 (San Diego) -If you're a first-time homebuyer, you may be able to take advantage of state funds awarded to the County of San Diego Department of Housing and Community Development. The department received $15 million for the Mortgage Credit Certificate, or MCC, program, in addition to almost $11 million awarded to Housing and Community Development earlier this year.

COUNTY TO PROVIDE FREE CAR SEATS TO LOW INCOME FAMILIES



December 9, 2009 (San Diego)--Thanks to a $207,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) will improve child safety by offering vehicle protection education and providing 2,000 child car seats to low-income families.

 

Funding for “Keep ‘Em Safe” comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

CALIFORNIA WELCOME CENTER OPENS IN ALPINE

 

December 7, 2009 (Alpine) – San Diego East  Visitors Bureau celebrated the grand opening last week of its new office in the Viejas Outlet Center in Alpine. The site is an official California Welcome Center, providing information for tourists on attractions in East County and the San Diego region.
 

“This is the first California Welcome Center ever opened on tribal lands,” said Charlie Brown, director of Viejas Community Relations.
