Many of them will be first-timers, inspired to try their hand at tilling the soil for economic reasons as well as the many benefits gardening offers.

ON THE SILVER SCREEN: UNEVEN SCRIPT MAKES "THE BOUNTY HUNTER" THE HUNTED

By Brian Lafferty

March 19, 2010 (San Diego's East County) -- The Bounty Hunter has, on paper, an interesting concept for a romantic comedy: a journalist (Jennifer Aniston) on trial for assault skips bail to help a snitch, who has information about a suicide case she’s investigating. Before they can meet, the snitch is kidnapped. Her ex-husband (Gerard Butler) is offered five grand to bring her back. As the lights went down and the projector ground to life, I thought this premise, contrived as it may be, could deliver some laughs. I wish I could say that was the case.

HOMELESS IN EAST COUNTY: INJURED & MENTALLY ILL, JAMUL MAN FINDS HELP IS SCARCE

By Richard Darvas

March 16, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) -- Days before Bryan Brzezowski’s sixteenth birthday, he began to hear voices, he recalled in an interview with East County Magazine. Paranoid strangers warned of outward threats. “Oh, this person’s out to get you. That person just wants to kick your butt.”

At 25 years old, he was diagnosed as a mild schizophrenic. Shortly after he became homeless in September 2008, the depth of his mental illness manifested itself in loudening delusions, self-identity confusion and unprovoked irritation, he recalled.

EDITORIAL: THE CRIMINALIZATION OF SENIORS, THE DISABLED, AND THOSE WHO CARE FOR THEM

By Pamela Hoye

March 17, 2010 (San Diego) -- I was relieved to read in East County Magazine that the federal Department of Justice has come forward to support court challenges that would block Governor Schwarzenegger’s funding cuts to the State’s In-Home Supportive Services Program (IHSS). But there other ways to kill a program, and do so quietly, besides funding cuts. Those of us currently receiving services are facing a vastly altered and far less caring program that threatens to force many of us into nursing homes.

Although disabled by cerebral palsy since birth and unable to keep a pace required by regular employment, I have been a productive member of society. I have worked as a freelance writer, editor, and desktop publisher, in addition to serving on citizen advisory committees and being active in political action groups.

28% INCREASE IN UNINSURED CALIFORNIANS: 1 IN 4 ADULTS HAVE NO HEALTHCARE COVERAGE

March 17, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) –California’s healthcare crisis has dramatically worsened. From 2008 to 2009, nearly 2 million people in our state lost their health insurance amid recession and layoffs, according to the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. That’s a 28% jump over the prior year. Nearly one-quarter of all adult Californians lack health insurance.

In San Diego yesterday, approximately 200 people held a rally downtown calling on Congress to enact healthcare reforms to assure coverage for all Americans and halt insurance industry abuses that deny people affordable care.

BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: KNIGHTS' 78-73 OT LOSS MARKS END OF AN ERA FOR EL CAJON TEAM

by Christopher Mohr

(El Cajon) March 18 - It was as if fans of El Cajon Foothills Christian High School boys basketball team had found the perfect wave, riding on the performances of seniors Troy Leaf, Kalob Hatcher and Jvonte Brooks. As anyone from California knows, waves don't last forever; you enjoy the ride while it lasts.

The Knights' wave crashed with their 78-73 overtime loss last Saturday night to the visiting Wildcats of Windward High School from West Los Angeles. The two teams faced off in a Division V state playoff game at Granite Hills High School. Only six weeks ago, the they both played each other on February 6 at the same location. That game was a high scoring thriller with the Knights winning 87-86.
