February 5, 2018 (San Diego) -- Congressman Duncan D. Hunter’s dismal campaign finance reports have attracted national attention, and not in a good way. He raised a paltry $50,073 in the last three months of 2017 and spent $264,255, with $178,146 spent with five law firms. At the onset of 2018, the campaign had just $290,904 in the bank, less than half of what it did a year earlier.

READER’S EDITORIAL: REP. HUNTER’S “CLOWN HALL” MEETING

By Patrick Malloy, candidate, 50th Congressional District

March 18, 2017 (Ramona) -- I was inside at the Ramona "town hall" but that's not an accurate depiction. It started off with prayer, and then led into the Congressman's adoration of our President, skipping over the checks and balances that we elected him for. My name is Patrick Malloy, I'm running in 2018 or sooner if we have a special election, which we deserve. I ran for this seat in the last election.

“Be aware that if any of my students made the statements you are erroneously posing as fact they would fail the course…”—Reneé Owens, environmental science instructor

February 19, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) -- Yesterday I sent my Congressional Representative, Duncan Hunter Jr., a message urging him not to weaken or dismantle our Environmental Protection Agency, as the 2017 Congress is threatening to do. If anything the agency needs strengthening and more funds to do their jobs. Today he responded, telling me the EPA is a big problem. I know something about the EPA in my line of work, so I felt obligated to respond:

LOCAL CONGRESSIONAL RESULTS : ISSA COULD FACE TOUGH BATTLE IN NOVEMBER TO HOLD SEAT; OTHER INCUMBENTS HAVE SOLID PRIMARY VICTORIES

East County News Service

June 8,2016 (San Diego’s East County) – Incumbents beat challenges soundly in East County’s three Congressional Districts,  but San Diego Congressman Darrell Issa  could face an upset in November. With 100% of San Diego County’s precincts tallied, here are the results.

Issa, a Republican, has 48.8% of the vote with all but provisional ballots counted.  Democrat Doug Applegate has 47.86%, trailing Issa by less than 1% in San Diego County, while Ryan Wingo has 3.29%.  The district also includes part of Orange County, where Issa fared better, leading Applegate 57.5% to38.6% but with far fewer voters.  Adding both counties together, Issa has 51.2% ,Applegate 45.4%  and Wingo 3.4%. Wingo is a nonpartisan candidate running on a platform of legalizing marijuana and opposing war. Wingo voters would  be most likely to vote Democratic in a two-person run-off,  meaning Issa could be in for a battle in November to hold onto his seat.

EDITORIAL: THE SLIPPERY “SOAP” THEORY OF REP. HUNTER

By Joseph Rocha

February 16, 2010 (San Diego) --On the first day of college, many new students across the country make the fatal error of trying to defend an argument on grounds of the Slippery Slope Theory. Without fail, this unfortunate bunch is met by the crushing blow of professors eager to send a message that this theory is not welcome in academia. Basic principles of logic identify the Slippery Slope Theory (a fallacy and obsolete premise to any argument) with this textbook definition: “It occurs when the conclusion of an argument rests upon the claim that a certain event will set off a chain reaction, leading in the end to some undesirable consequence, yet there is not sufficient reason to think that the chain reaction will actually take place.” (Ph.D Hurley-A Concise Approach to Logic)

Rep. Duncan Hunter Jr. was done a great disservice in never having been taught this fundamental principle.  He has irresponsibly brought this fallacy to the forefront of the debate on whether to allow all of our troops to serve under honorable, dignified conditions via repeal of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy.
