History and Overview -Réveillon, a long dinner and party, was held on the eves before Christmas Day and New Year's Day in Brazil, in France and some other French-speaking countries. The name is based on the word réveil (meaning "waking"); because participation involves staying awake until midnight and beyond.

Reveillon is about "awakening" the senses with food and celebrating all that the joy of Christmas and the New Year bring. The food consumed at réveillons is generally exceptional or luxurious. Quality wine is usually consumed at such dinners, often with champagne or similar sparkling wines as a conclusion.
