Also Get Dog Licenses, Microchips and Rabies Vaccinations Sunday Clinic

March 9, 2013 (San Diego) – In an effort to prevent the birth of unwanted kittens and puppies this time of year, County Animal Services will continue to offer $100 coupons for spaying female cats and also make the coupons available for spaying female pit bulls and Chihuahuas through the month of March while supplies last.  Coupons for $75 are available for both male and female dogs of other breeds and male cats.

Pet owners can pick up the coupons from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10 during a clinic at County Animal Services located at 5480 Gaines Street in San Diego. Owners can also get their four-legged family members microchipped, vaccinated and licensed during that time.

“Cats as young as four to five months old are in heat now. When the litters arrive, our shelters are inundated with unwanted kittens,” said County Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson. “We can’t adopt our way out of this problem because not that many families are looking to adopt two or three new kittens every year! We’re hoping the spay coupons will make a difference.”

The County shelters also house a large number of unwanted pit bulls and Chihuahuas so the $100 coupons were recently made available for the females of those breeds.

During the Sunday clinic, microchips for pets cost $20 and include the registration. Rabies vaccinations for dogs four months or older and cats three months or older are $6. Amnesty from late fees is offered to owners who have failed to license their dog or have allowed their dog’s annual license to lapse. For the protection of owners and their pets, dogs must be on a leash and cats in a carrier while at the clinic.

Microchipping and rabies vaccinations are available to anyone. Licensing and spay or neuter coupons are available for residents who live in the unincorporated county or the contract cities of San Diego, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar and Santee.  The coupons are also available at the three County Animal Shelters in San Diego, Bonita or Carlsbad during regular business hours.
