East County  News Service

August 23, 2015 (Lakeside) – Yesterday at 5:30 a.m., 16 detectives and deputies from the Lakeside Sheriff's Substation conducted a probation compliance/directed patrol operation in the Lakeside area.  Thirteen people were arrested, including five on warrants and seven on misdemeanor crimes. Stolen property was also recovered, including a $1,500 sound system control console.

The probation compliance objective was to contact active probationers and verify they are abiding by the terms of their releases from county jail. The probationers were identified through crime and intelligence analysis as individuals most likely to re-offend.

In addition, Deputies from the Court Service Bureau Field Division actively worked warrants in the same general area. Also targeted were persons who were illegally lodging or trespassing on public and private land. In cooperation with state and county resources, clean up of open areas and encampments was also planned.

Lakeside Homeless Sweep

So... we have homeless people who are that way because they have a record now... can't get a job for the same reason... have to exist somewhere... and, anywhere but NIMBY! Does anyone besides me see a problem spinning round and round? For the money spent in planning and executing this "round up" of "evil-doers", we could have put many into housing and job search assistance. The officers were doing their job for sure, but how many were really happy about this particular operation? If asked, I'm sure the officers could have come up with several alternate plans for what to do with most of the homeless people besides just going in and busting up the best effort of the homeless to get by. True infractions should have been dealt with, but those just trying to get by using any means necessary should have been left alone or directed to suitable places to set up their camp and live in peace.
