December 7, 2010 (Lakeside) – Numerous 911 calls to Heartland Fire Communications reported a fire in a three-story apartment complex on Saturday, December 4 5:18 p.m. Initial arriving units to the 12800 block of Mapleview Street were faced with a well-advanced fire in an upstairs unit rapidly extending to a neighboring apartment.

Numerous hose lines were deployed to knock-down the fire. Because of the amount of fire showing and the potential for fire spread, units from Lakeside requested a 2nd-alarm just prior to arriving on scene. Roof operations were initiated by Santee firefighters, limiting the potential for horizontal fire spread through the common attic of the structure. Salvage operations were also conducted to mitigate the water damage in the unit below the fire apartment.

“This incident was an excellent example of the importance of a timely response by an adequate number of firefighters to stop a fast-moving, dangerous, and destructive fire,” a press release from Heartland Fire stated. Assisting agencies on this incident included Santee Fire (E4, T4, M4, E5s, R5, B2), El Cajon Fire ( E9, B3), and San Miguel Fire (E19). San Diego County Sheriff's deputies and American Red Cross also assisted.

The Union-Tribune reports that two young girls helped warn residents about the fire to help get everyone safely out of the building. Fortunately, no injuries occurred.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Lakeside Fire District fire investigators.
