June 7, 2023 (Lemon Grove)- The Lemon Grove Recreation Center will be hosting the 3rd annual 3-on-3 Trevon Harris basketball tournament on June 10, 2023, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 Basketballers must be ages 10 to 16 to participate in the tournament.  There is no entry fee and players may register onsite at the event beginning at 8:30 a.m.  The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with tip-off.

This is a free event that will bode a March Madness bracket style basketball competition, free music/entertainment, and free food.

The tournament is being held in honor and memoriam of Trevon Harris, a gregarious, ambitious, and God-fearing young boy with an infectious personality and love for Christ whose life ended abruptly by a tragic accident when he was struck by vehicle shortly after his 13th birthday.

In spite of his youth, Trevon had an impressive reach and a tremendous impact on countless lives - an impact that still reverberates today.

“This basketball tournament is meant to encourage young people to make a difference in the world and to remember Trevon for generations to come,” his mother, Tanya Harris, said.  Trevon, who had an insatiable love for basketball, dreamed of playing in the NBA one day like basketball icons Steph Curry and Lebron James.

Harris will continue to use his life, legacy, and love for basketball to inspire others and plans to establish the Be*Lieve Trevon Harris Foundation that will, in the spirit of Trevon’s giving heart, help kids and families with the necessities as well as give out scholarships for education and sports.

Since its inception, the tournament’s popularity has grown in interest and participation.

This year Shanikqua Freeman -Trevon’s godmother and first-time children’s book author who is a native San Diegan- will be joining as a special guest. Freeman recently released Don’t Give In!, a tale of friendship, risks, obstacles, tenacity, and perseverance, dedicated to Trevon Harris. Freeman will host an author meet and greet, as well as a book signing during the tournament.

Don’t Give In! is available for purchase on Amazon.com and www.3rddaypublishing.com;

This is the second book dedicated in honor of Trevon.  Last year’s release, Kicks written by Van Garrett and illustrated by San Diego illustrator Reggie Brown, was also dedicated to Trevon.

The event is sponsored by Coach Mark Horton, Improving Lemon Grove, Akuma, Nu-Life Worship Center, and 3rd Day Publishing.
