September 28, 2017 (San Diego) – Six of East County Magazine’s reporters are on the winners’ list in the San Diego Press Club’s  Excellence in Journalism awards.  Congratulations to our reporters Jonathan Goetz,  Rebecca Jefferis-Williamson, Paul Kruze, Mimi Pollack,  Rachel Williams, and editor Miriam Raftery.

Press Club lists only names of winners.  So we don’t yet know what articles or categories were winners, or the placements.  Also a couple of these writers entered works for more than one publication.   But it’s clear that ECM will once again have multiple winning articles, boosting our total of 101 journalism awards even higher!

Our entries this year spanned a broad variety of topics, including our coverage of the Alfred Olango shooting, efforts to reopen the East County Performing Arts Center, aftermath of the Border Fire, Syrian refugees, wildlife rescue organizations, collapse of a wind turbine, ethics issues local elected officials in both political parties, and  First Amendment rights.

The awards gala will be held on October 24 at the Jacobs Center.
