Drills aim to prepare law enforcement officers in the event of a school shooting

July 15, 2013 (El Cajon) – If you live or work in El Cajon be advised the Sheriff's Department will hold an active shooter training at Grossmont College on Tuesday, July 16th and Thursday, July 18th from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. THIS IS ONLY A DRILL.

The DRILL will involve sounds of gunfire to simulate a situation where a gunman is shooting at people. Teams of deputies and officers taking part in the exercise will make their way through the campus with mock firearms, practicing how they would track down a gunman. They will also check the classrooms and practice evacuation procedures. The goal is to prepare law enforcement personnel so they know what to expect in the chaos of a real shooting scenario.

Some classes are in session for the summer break, but students and staff were notified via email and text messages. There will be road signs informing the public of the drill.

People who live or work near Grossmont College need not be concerned about the extra presence of law enforcement, as well as the sound of gunfire because it is ONLY A DRILL.

Why the long hours? The hours were allotted to accommodate various shifts of deputies and officers.

Call the Santee Sheriff's Station at (619) 956-4000 for more information.

Stay safe.
