September 27, 2012 (La Mesa) – A resident sleeping in an apartment at 5300 Marengo Avenue was awakened this afternoon by smoke. Seeing flames coming from her stove, she tried to douse the fire with water, which caused the fire to spread. She then evacuated the apartment, which suffered $50,000 in damages to the structure and contents.

Heartland Fire and Rescue crews from La Mesa, assisted by units from San Diego Fire, were dispatched at 3:55 p.m. following multiple 911 calls. Crews arrived within five minutes to find light smoke coming from the third floor and fire coming out a window. Crews stretched hose lines into the interior and aggressively fought the fire, extinguishing it within five minutes.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation. The American Red Cross is assisting two adults displaced by the blaze.
