July 1, 2017 (Escondido) – CAL FIRE law enforcement officers on Thursday arrested Jose Duran Aguirre, 31, a transient in Escondido, on arson charges.  He is accused of recklessly setting fire to a forest land and for discharging an emergency signaling device in a manner other than the permitted use.

Aguirre is accused of setting the Trails Fire, which charred three acres on Thursday just east of Frances Ryan Park along Hidden Trails Road in Escondido, California.  There were no reported injuries or property damage in the blaze, which firefighters from Escondido Fire and CAL FIRE swiftly doused.

The arrest was made in cooperation with Escondido Police and Fire department personnel who assisted in the joint investigation.

“CAL FIRE works diligently in arson cases to aggressively investigate and prosecute those suspected of intentionally starting fires” said CAL FIRE Chief Tony Mecham.

Aguirre was booked into the San Diego Central Jail on a $50,000 bail and is set to be arraigned on Wednesday, July 5th.

If you witness someone suspicious, make note of the time, his or her physical description, as well as any vehicle description, including the license plate number, CAL FIRE advises. Always contact law enforcement, never approach a suspicious person. Anyone with information about arson is urged to contact the CAL FIRE Arson Hotline at 1-800-468-4408. Callers can remain anonymous.
