March 5, 2017 (San Diego) - Senior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift San Diego State to a 5-4 win over UC Davis on the final day of the San Diego Classic I Sunday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium. It was the third straight win for the Aztecs (11-7), who are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls.

Trailing 4-3 after the Aggies (7-12) scored three runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a pair of SDSU errors, San Diego State loaded the bases on a single by redshirt freshman Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.), when sophomore Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) reached on an error and a walk to junior Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.). With two outs, Cable ripped a single to right field to plate Wright and Peres with the tying and go-ahead runs, respectively.

The game featured 19 hits - 11 by UCD and eight by the Aztecs, but the teams left a combined 19 runners on base (11 by SDSU and eight by UC Davis). Additionally, only two of the nine runs in the game were earned as the Aggies committed three errors and San Diego State two.

UCD got on the scoreboard in the second when Brianna Warner’s infield single plated Marissa Jauregui.

The Aztecs answered in the bottom half of the inning as senior Jaylene Igancio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) singled off the glove of the third baseman to score junior Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.).

SDSU took the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs, as sophomore Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) drove in Ignacio with a single and later scored on a single by sophomore Molly Studivant (Santa Ana, Calif.).

UC Davis took back the lead in the aforementioned fifth inning as back-to-back San Diego State errors led the three runs, setting up Cable’s heroics in the sixth.

Cable was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and finished the San Diego Classic I with 11 RBIs in five games.

Ignacio added two hits, an RBI and a run, while Sturdivant had a RBI single and a walk. Stewart also walked twice in the game.

The Aztec pitching trio of senior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.), freshman Marissa Moreno (Torrance, Calif.) and junior Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) allowed 11 hits in the game, but seven were infield singles. Romero got the start and gave up one run on six hits over three innings, while striking out one. Moreno (5-2) picked up the win after allowing three unearned runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings with one strikeout. Formby, meanwhile, got Carolina Figueroa to ground out to Byrd at second base with a runner on second in her only batter faced to earn her first save of the season.

SDSU wraps up a six-game homestand Tuesday night against Detroit Mercy. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT.
