Two Aztecs claim singles championships on Sunday

November 11, 2018 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women's tennis team wrapped up day three of the SDSU Fall Classic II on Sunday, where sophomore Abbie Mulbarger and freshman Agustina Rimoldi Godoy won their respective singles championship brackets. In total, the Aztecs tallied six victories on Sunday to close the annual fall tournament.

In doubles action, senior Jenny Moinard and freshman Shakhnoza Khatamova claimed third place in flight A with their 6-3 win over Colorado’s Monica Malinen and Megan Forster, and junior Mia Smith and sophomore Abbie Mulbarger topped Marquette’s Milica Novakovic and Elisabeth Desmarais, 6-1, in flight B’s consolation round.

In doubles flight C, freshmen Ellie Ashley and Lauren Anderson dropped the third place match to Colorado’s Brigette Beck and Annabelle Andrinopoulos, 6-2, and freshmen Aesha Patel and Agustina Rimoldi Godoy fell 6-4 to Marta Heinen and Stephanie Broussard (EWU) in flight C consolation play.

Singles competition was highlighted by Mulbarger’s 6-2, 6-4 victory over Whitney Turley (Utah) in flight D’s championship match, and Rimoldi Godoy’s 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 championship win in the flight E final over Utah’s Anya Lamoureax.

Moinard kept a close fight against Janice Shin (Stanford) for the co-championship in flight A, but ultimately fell in the third set to Shin with a score of 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 6-2. Sophomore Nnena Nadozie, who competed in the third place match in flight B, was unable to take Lindsay Hung (Utah) down in three sets, dropping a 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 decision.

In singles flight C, Smith also dropped her third place matchup against Monica Malinen (CU), 1-6, 6-4, 10-5. The Aztecs also dropped a consolation match to the Buffaloes when Brigitte Beck defeated Shakhnoza Khatamova, 6-3, 7-5, in flight D consolation. In flight F, Anderson settled for fourth place after a 2-6, 6-3, 10-1 loss to EWU’s Stephanie Broussard.

In the round robin singles draw, freshmen Ashley and Patel both won for the second day in a row to bring the SDSU win total to six. Patel topped Jasmine Rich (Utah) 2-6, 7-5, 10-8, while Ashley downed Jane Ellis (Fresno State) 6-2, 6-1.
