June 5, 2023 (Ramona) -- The San Diego Humane Society recently posted on Facebook, “We bear-ly can contain our excitement, as two bear cubs have an incredible second chance at life in the wild after spending five months at our Ramona Wildlife Center for care and rehabilitation!”
The male and female cubs, each 15 months old, have been released in Central California's Inyo and Tulare Counties by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Both cubs arrived at the Ramona facility in December.
The male cub had been orphaned and was displaying signs of becoming accustomed to human presence, posing risks for both the bear and the public.
The female cub was discovered abandoned and malnourished. Wildlife authorities believe she was orphaned, due to heavy rainstorms that can flood bear dens.
During their stay in Ramona, the cubs were housed in an outdoor enclosure with access to trees and natural surroundings, allowing them to engage in activities like running, climbing, playing, and foraging for food.
The Humane Society concludes, “We are immensely grateful to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and our exceptional Project Wildlife team for providing these bears with the opportunity to lead healthy lives in their natural habitat.”
