March 15, 2010 (Spring Valley) – Timing is everything, as an arsonist found out the hard way this morning. Shortly before 7:30 a.m., a San Miguel Fire battalion chief driving in the 3400 block of Sweetwater Springs  noticed a man toss something at a boat parked in a home's front yard. An instant later, the 20-foot ski boat erupted into flames.

The suspect got into a car and drove off. The battalion chief, driving a staff vehicle with no suppression gear, called in the fire. He then followed the suspect’s vehicle and notified the Sheriff, who pulled over the suspect on Campo Road. The male suspect leaped out and fled on foot, leaving two females in the car. He was caught and taken into custody a short time later by Sheriff’s deputies, along with the two females.

The Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Squad is now investigating the suspected arson fire. The boat’s value was estimated at $10,000. No injuries were reported.
