April 21, 2011 (El Cajon)—On Earth Day, MLB Industries Inc, the San Diego-based manufacturer of Happy Heinys reusable diapers, will host one of over 400 sites at 32 countries worldwide where cloth diaper enthusiasts will gather and seek to add cloth diapers to the Guinness Book of World Records. The company aims to help set a world record for most disposable diapers changed out for cloth at its Happy Heinys manufacturing facility, along with its natural parenting store, Baby Frenzy, on Saturday, April 23 from 8:30- 9:15a.m. at 1529 N Cuyamaca St in El Cajon.

Every five minute,3,000 throwaway diapers will be sent to San Diego landfills.

If even half of the approximately 312 million children under age 2 in the world, use single-use disposable diapers then 867,000 tons will enter the landfill every minute. It is estimated that it will take 250-500 years for disposable diapers to decompose so those diapers will be there for a long time.

“Today, many people are choosing to reject the use of all single-use items such as plastic bottles and grocery bags in favor for reusable versions. Similarly, parents are choosing reusable diapers which can cut some household waste in half,” states Linda Byerline CEO of Happy Heinys. “Parents are not only making this choice for environmental reasons but as we see the unemployment rates continue to climb, parents are looking for every possible way that they can save money and reusable diapers is certainly one of the easiest ways to save over $2000 per baby. Plus if you add to this the recent attention regarding lead and BPA found in children’s products as well as increasing sensitivities to environmental toxins parents are becoming more careful about the products they bring into their home, including the diapers.”

Happy Heinys’ owner and inventor was inspired to start her family-owned reusable diaper company after the premature birth of her daughter, who developed serious health/breathing problems as a result of being on a ventilator. It was later discovered that when they switched over to reusable cloth diapers that the needs for medications and hospitalizations were decreased by 50%, says Byerline. “Many parents are unaware of the fact that a disposable diaper can release harmful toxins into the air which their baby then breathes in." Diaper allergies can also cause health problems for babies, she added.

In addition to Happy Heinys being an environmentally friendly product, the companies products are wholly manufactured in their own facility in the East County of San Diego. Unlike their competitors who have moved production internationally, they have no plans on leaving their San Diego roots and the local employees who work for them.

“While it is increasingly difficult to maintain a business in the USA, many parents are now demanding locally made products for their babies. Even when a product is manufactured internationally & passes all testing, those products still must be placed in chemically laden containers for shipping thus exposing the products to those chemicals,” states Byerline who has become an expert in the field of cloth diapering and the resources used and saved in comparison to disposable diapers.

Jamba Juice will also be on site with all proceeds going to the Heiny Project for its charity mission: to make sure that no baby shall ever go without a clean diaper to use. In addition, there will be raffle prizes and giveaways. An in-store photographer will be in and available for family pictures, several crafting moms will be on hand. and Officer Brian Pennings from the CHP will hold a car seat safety class at 3 p.m.

Happy Heinys has become the go-to reusable diaper for not only many local families but it is also the #1 reusable diaper used by such celebrities as: Lauren Bowles of True Blood, Constance Marie of George Lopez, Alaina Huffman of Stargate, Kelly Rutherford of Gossip Girl, and many others.
