January 13, 2009 (San Diego) - Ron Nehring, Chair of the California Republican Party, gave an update on the GOP’s priorities nationally and statewide during a San Diego County Republican Party Central Committee meeting January 12. Nehring reported that during the Obama administration, the Republican National Committee’s priorities will include limiting the scope of government, opposing higher taxes and maintaining a strong national defense, according to the conservative blog site, Red County.
Nehring , a long-time resident of East County and former member of the Grossmont Union High-School Board, noted that economic stimulus funds are most likely to wind up in targeted Democratic districts.
Middle-class voters trended Democrat in San Diego County during the recent election, he observed. Hoping to improve performance in future elections, the RNC will try to overturn McCain-Feingold campaign finance limits and encourage its candidates to utilize social media marketing through Internet venues such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as customized platforms, taking a cue from Barack Obama’s successful use of such technologies to boost contributions and leverage its network of grassroots volunteers. He cited Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, a Republican candidate running for Senator Barbara Boxer’s seat in 2010, as an example of a California Republican who “gets” the use of social media in political campaigns.
