January 4, 2012 (San Diego County) -- Effective January 1, 2012, California Fire Safe Council (CFSC) will become the state liaison for the Firewise Communities/USA program in California. This new designation is part of an agreement between Firewise USA, CFSC and CAL FIRE that delegates CAL FIRE's authority as State Firewise liaison to the California Fire Safe Council. The agreement is memorialized in a Memorandum of Understanding between CFSC and CAL FIRE.

As part of its duties, California Fire Safe Council will continue to promote the program to communities, local Fire Safe Councils and local government, encouraging leaders to pursue Firewise status. CFSC will also approve applications through coordination with state, federal and local fire officials. CAL FIRE will continue to work with communities and assist with the assessments in the State Responsibility Areas throughout California.

CFSC Board and staff are excited about this new opportunity and look forward to working with communities throughout the state to encourage becoming both Fire Safe Councils and Firewise Communities. If you are interested in learning more about Fire Safe Councils and/or the Firewise Communities/USA program, please contact California Fire Safe Council at (800) 372-2543 or info@cafiresafecouncil.org.
